Franay of France did a number of bodies on Packard chassis in the late 30s, several of them are pictured in Hugo Pfau's nice book. This lovely one-off had an interesting history, ordered originally by a French aristocrat and taken over by the Nazis after the fall of France, and used by the Military Governor of Paris as a staff car. When the Germans fled, the car was picked up, repainted in US olive drab, and used by the US armed forces. It suffered a serious accident and was bought and returned to the States in 1953 by a US military man and underwent a restoration about 20(?) years later. It was exhibited at Pebble Beach this year and pictured in the current (December 08) issue of Car Collector magazine. Current owner is in New Jersey. Photo by my friend Jeff Guss on 12/7/08 at the CCCA Metro Region Christmas Party. |
