8x10 black and white Packard Co. file photograph of a 1952 Packard view of interior through right side door, top folded, two men standing at driver's door. Inscribed on photo back; 1952 Packard 'Pan American' sports car, twenty-fifth series, model 2531 (modified 250 convertible, 6-person, Body type #2579), 8-cylinder, 185-horsepower, 122-inch wheelbase, special show car, designed by Richard Arbib, built by Henney, this was first of six Pan American show cars, exhibited International Motor Sports Show at Grand Central Palace New York, N.Y. opened 29 March 1952, interior top grain oyster white leather on seats, dash, door panels, sun visors, & steering wheel, contrasting leather on steering wheel spokes, door trim panels, door handles, pleated seat sections, rear panels of seat backs. You don't get the full effect of the work that went into restyling the Convertible shell to create the Pan American until you see it from this angle. The rear fenders were not stretched to accommodate the "continental" spare tire carrier, but the trunk lid was actually relocated forward. |

Based on the 250 Convertible, a full four inches was sectioned out of the body and front and rear springs were modified to achieve the low-slung look of this prototype sports car. A stylish, yet functional, hood scoop funneled air to a (then) novel 4-barrel carburetor, perched on a modified Thunderbolt eight that pumped out 185hp. Interest in this custom-bodied car lead to the production of the 1953 Caribbean. |
