Hi Ross

Nice looking '56 President Classic! How about a couple pictures of it? They were the basis for the '57 Clipper Town Sedans. The '57 President Classic gave up it's nicer interior, moulded-in door and folding rear seat center armrests to the '57 Packard.

When the '56 Studebaker restyle was in the works by Vince Gardner, I suspect one of the parameters laid out by Nance to get rid of the unfortunate "droopy p---s" look of the '53-'55 sedans was to impart a familial look with the Clippers and Packards. It was a big aesthetic improvement over the previous cars.....at least for my taste.

Steve

I saw it one day with the sun visors down in the car, and it gave it that look like it had one. I've always like the external sun visors.

-GearRat

Basically one finger, middle right, with a little assistance from the left forefinger for left sided keys like shift, caps lock and tab! Even then I get it wrong, don't know how many posts I've lost because of hitting the wrong key! Plus I'm sure the keyboard letters move around. How is it possible that I make the many spelling mistakes found when proof reading?

Regarding the valve grinding gear, I'm sure Wade would snap one up if he found one. It was only last year he finally came across a king pin reaming set and bought that. I like your valve holding rack, a lot sturdier than floppy pieces of cardboard. The other ready-to-hand valve holder that Wade usually uses is the used head gasket, off the engine being worked on, which has enough head stud and water passage holes for that purpose. But, in this instance, the 356 engine came without a head gasket hence a MBM cardboard setup.

Gorgeous hub caps.....I have the same style but for a 53 clipper. I was wondering if anyone would have the rims that would go with dog dish hubcaps. The rims have no clips but the rim is molded with 3 lips on it where the hubcap snaps into place.

Any ideas on where one could find rims like that either packard originals or another make or model that would fits the hubcaps??

51-3 have the same part number. Different for 54. Not sure what the changes are or if 54 would fit or attach the same as on earlier.

If you don't find a pair from someone here, Big Jim's might have some used. http://www.bigjims.net/othersk.htm

Randy,

More great facts. I was wondering if the 300 might be a candidate platform for the convertible. But wasn't the 300 a long-wheelbase Packard??? Things are so sketchy about these models, it seems to be taking several Packard heads together to get to the bottom of it!

Awesome pic of the chassis Owen-- not having had a lot of experience with the undersides of these cars, I'm wondering what has been added. Is that actually a second X under the first? It looks like it's attached to extra heavy rails as well. I bet this, like many convertibles, weighed a lot more than the standard model it was based on.

I hope this info helps the seller to present the car to its best advantage on e-bay. After all, this is a buy-sell forum.

V-8 (1955-56):: Fuel Pump
Quote:

Owen_Dyneto wrote:

As to "sediment" bowls, they are invariable on the suction or intake side of pump and never show any air space. Senior Packards up until about 1939 used glass bowls with a fine brass screen above to prevent fluid turbulence from allowing any of the sediment to pass on into the pump internals. Most of the double action post war pumps use a metal cup sediment bowl, again with a screen. But the filter you discuss with the pleated paper element that "floats" must be improperly sized or installed, the element fits securely to the casting at the top so that no fuel can get around it. Take it apart and I suspect you'll find the problem.

Sorry Owen, I'm not an expert and don't have a perfect 20-year plus memory. There was no "casting" in the bowl cover, the filter press fit onto a metal tube (the filter was only open at one end). This setup provider a much larger, finer filter area than a ceramic type. It was OK, but still a hassle to remove the bowl for replacement.

The bowl filter is a sediment bowl no matter where it's placed, (hence you clean what has settled into it once in a while, as you noted). I don't know about 1939 filters/bowls or double action pumps, but I suspect that those bowls were placed on the intake side of the pump to act as a pre-pump filter, as is recommended today with electric pumps. Some mechanical fuel pumps come with a bowl attached, glass or metal (1947 Dodge, for instance), which I doubt has any other filtering properties than to catch sediment and water.

The presence of air in a glass sediment bowl/filter is an interesting phenomenon, but solving the question of why it's there isn't very helpful: as noted in my last post and again in a later one--even translucent in-line filters show "air space" and work fine. I'm sure there is air in the metal in-line filters as well, but we just don't see it.

As Ross said, the ones labeled inlet on the bottom were for the early 356 motor, and had an internal By-Pass feature if the filter got plugged. Which could happen as that style filtered used the inside of the filter, which presented a smaller filter surface area. I just reversed the pluming on mine to match the later cars, and it has been fine. (Inlet on the side)

I would think it would.

I have a gerry rigged application here using a 12v ford starter relay that stays energized for 3 to 12 minutes at a time with maybe no longer than a 15 minute "off" time between cycles. Even on a real hot day for 8 to 20 cycles the relay only gets warm to the touch but never anything that would be considered hot. The coil section wireing of the relay has a 12v feed thru 14 feet of fire FROMm cigarette liter of vehicle.

But i can not claim several hours of SUSTAINED energized relay use as would be the case with Air conditioning.

For Sale, Wanted, Trade:: 1954 Convertible Project Available
1954 Packard Convertible
- Partially restored & needs a good home to finish the job.

I began the restoration project in 1992 and set-out restoring the car to a high standard with the intention of showing it. The car was stripped down to the bare frame, the entire chassis was powder coated and the suspension rebuilt while the engine and transmission was being rebuilt. This is where things started to go wrong. The mechanic working on the front suspension was badly injured wha strap holding a spring in place let go. Someone else completed the reassembly at the shop and I was never happy with the result. I should have taken this as a bad omen.

The newly rebuilt engine and transmission were reinstalled in the chassis. Work progressed on the car at a slow pace with the entire rolling chassis ultimately completed. Most of the chrome was replated and other component parts were restored during this time. The restoration shop, still short handed by the injury pretty much stopped working on the car not too long after completing the chassis.

To move the project along I took the car to another local shop that had a great reputation for doing metal work. Once there the body work from the firewall back was done all in metal. The rockers required a little patching, the rear quarters required more significant repairs and the paint was stripped from the rest of the body.

The car was supposed to have the doors, trunk and other sheet metal fitted and finished but a change in job status for me forced me to halt the project. The car was moved to my garage in 1995.

The story jumps to 2009 when I set about to finish the car. I sent it another local shop that I had dealt with over the years with orders to get the car running and finish the bodywork and paint. I won’t go into detail but after 2 ½ years and getting the help of an Attorney I finally g...

Packard Engineer: Michael J. Kollins [by RogerDetroit]

General:: Packard Engineer: Michael J. Kollins
MotorCities National Heritage Area is an affiliate of the National Park Service and is dedicated to preserving, interpreting and promoting the automotive heritage of the State of Michigan. It is one of 49 National Heritage Areas in the United States and it is the largest concentration of auto-related sites in the world.

Each week the MCNHA sends out an e-mail to members (I think membership is free) and offers up a quick story related to automobile history. The latest e-mail discusses Michael J. Kollins, a Packard engineer and former test driver.

http://www.motorcities.org/Story+of+the+Week.html?utm_source=MotorCities+Newsletter+Vol.+3+Issue+15&utm_campaign=You+Auto+Know+Newsletter&utm_medium=email

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Kollins and arranged for him to be the guest speaker at Motor City Packards Perrysburg Meet in 2004. Unfortunately, he passed away in December 2003 and we had to schedule another speaker.

As the above story mentions, Michael Kollins liked to create cars from two different manufacturers – like the 1958 Kollins Le Grande Roadster. This was a combination of a 1930 Duesenburg, model J and a special frame built by A.O. Smith and based on the 1950 Packard Super Convertible design.

You can a read about that car here:
http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z15932/Kollins-Le-Grande-Roadster.aspx

Quote:

I see it all the time. 361 cubic inches, 350 horsepower, 800 ftlbs of torque, motor is shot by 150,000 miles even with the benefits from clean burning emission controls. And that is in a motor with reinforced main bearing webs.

Tim is obviously referencing a diesel engine.

They work much harder for their living than does a Packard V8. Can anyone imagine the next rebuilt Packard V8 to run up 150,000 miles?

Bottom line, of all the changes one could and should make to a Packard V8, an electric water pump is way far toward the bottom of the list. It's an incredible lot of work for very little benefit.

jack vines

You might do a search for Edelbrock on site. Several posts over the years, some with model number & type suggestions. One former poster had used them and recommended as a direct replacements (with a couple of minor things additional needed) for the 4GC. I don't remember if there was much info on any supercharging applications.

Post-War (1946-54):: Sticking #8 exhaust valve 359
If the valves are sticking after being serviced the inside of the guides are corroded and varnish collects within pits which then creates little wedges that close off clearances once the motor cools.

On the subject of the cylinder head I think that is an interesting issue given that engineers were fully aware that the L-head motor is subject to pre-ignition. I assume because the compression stroke creates a front that is not evenly distributed and causes diesel type combustion. The L-head motor is much more suseptible to piston noise than OHV motors.

That these rebuilt motors do it more as they age points to hot spots in the aluminum cylinder head probably from corrosion. Or perhaps the carburetors are worn and the Economizers are closing off too much under moderate throttle. I drove a 359 once that had an NOS carburetor and it did not ping.

The 356 head swap is academic, but a better solution would be to use lower compression pistons. A good machinist can turn .060 off the top in a mill. All that is required is the right specification. .060 is about one compression unit for a cylinder head. Of course for a motor rebuild the piston specification could be had from the manufacturer.

I was dealing with one of these pinging things and heard all about distributor curves and what not from now deceased experts, but I never bought it. Fortunately for the case I was handling the detonation was from over heating. The owner agrued with me that if the gauge is no solidly on Hot the motor is not overheating, even though it was spewing coolant out the over flow in the shop.

So I just fitted a 160 thermostat with out telling him what I was doing. He came in and started yelling at me that I wasn't installing the thing the right way. The car didn't have seat belts and I told him to drive it a fast as he wanted.

Pre-War (1899-1942):: 1937 Super 8 limo
The vehicle number on the patent plate (engine side of cowl) tells it all. What's the #?

If the tag is missing, let's start with the number of cylinders and the wheelbase. I assume from your thread title it's got 8 cylinders and thus not a Twelve. Is the distributor vertical on the top of cylinder head (Super Eight)?

Does it have a divider window between the front and rear?

The first section of the vehicle number will define the car. Some possibilities are:

1014 - sedan 5-7 pass
1014B - sedan 5-7 pass (commercial car)
1015 - limousine 5-7 pass
1015B - limousine 5-7 pass (commercial car)

All are on the 139 inch wheelbase.

Woo! Finally got the correct size wheel for my '52 200 at John's Salvage today. The donor was a '53 Clipper, from that I was also able to get the chrome tail fins which I am contemplating putting on. Another was the taillight bezel from a '52 200 that is going to a fellow in need of one for his '51. There are 5 Packards there, that I know of. A '52 200, '52 400, '53 Clipper, '55-'56 possibly Patrician, and another '55-'56 that is for sale as a complete car. There are probably more that I just haven't been able to get to.

Man I love that place! I'm like a kid in a candy store.

Hi

Found this YouTube clip from the movie Hollywood Hotel 1937 with Benny Goodman and his Big Band , Johnny 'Scat' Davis, Dick Powell, Rosemary Lane and Mabel Todd, lyrics by Johnny Mercer, music by Dick Whiting. It's a fun sequence.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW-cHXt2abs

The phaeton looks to be a '27-'28 Packard Six, those couple of years when the cusp were gone from the radiator face. Bunch of other interesting cars including a '29-'30 Lincoln, '33-'34 Ford convertible, and a convertible sedan which looks to be a '36-'37 Chrysler product.

"Puts you behind the eight ball": When was the last time you heard someone use that expression"

Steve

THose of u that have miscellaneous resilient ("rubber tipped") needle and seat laying around mite want to try to this test too. Based on my experience with engines in actual service any such rubber tipped needles that are NOT compatable with ethanol will have visually OBVIOUS swelling and slight distortion in about 1 year.

Riki,

Around here, at least so far, you don't need to do anything special if you've got an old car with the original fuel setup. Just pull up to that gas pump with the big snozzle and fill 'r up.

Yeah, can't count the times we've seen a big old touring or expensive car fly off a cliff, but the car rolling over and bouncing off the rocks on the way down is a '50 Chevy.

But somehow, doubt they'd crack up a '38 or '39 Darrin for the opening scene of a 1942 movie. And i'd love to see a video and/or close-up stills of that funeral scene mentioned above.

ALPS vehicles consistently bring big money - even when their paint has been rendered ghastly. I don't see the fascination myself, but then what do I know?? I'm just an old toy train collector.

The sad part is that after being crushed and sent to China, it will return back to the USA as a patio furniture set, or maybe a Wheel barrow.

Like Dave said, You can't save them all.

OD, that sounds about right. I thought about using some king of adhesive, but then changing the bulb becomes a problem for the average owner (if I ever sell it).

General:: How to sell car these days
part of that proofing - have some understanding of your car's model and bodystyle. Your 1948 Eight touring sedan with 288 shouldn't be advertised as a lwb limo with its original V8 engine. Not a made up example. The credibility of all your other info on the car takes a hit. If someone else is going to be fielding calls, write stuff down for them. Another real example: How many doors? I don't know.

Not specifically addressing the 22nd/23rd series, but there are quite a few specialists out there already that restore instruments, both mechanically and cosmetically. A browse through Hemmings should identify a few of them.
