In addition to going thru the PAC directory and making contact with other Henney owners for parts leads, one other possibility is the Professional Car Society which caters to owners of limos, hearses, ambulances and flower cars.

took the compensator motor off the torsion level suspension. yeah to say the least it is pretty nasty in there. lots of surface rust and corrosion. it will need a rebuild for sure.

enjoy.

i think this project blog has to be the most informative picture archive ever. i don't think i have seen a 55 in this many stages of pictures before, especially not all the components taken apart, so you can see what they look like. hope it helps others one day.

later,

Hank

General:: The History of Packard
Dad bought a new 51 400 and a year later a used 300. We had both cars for several years and no major problems that I can recall. The 400 made several cross country trips. He traded the 300 in on a Mercury which was a dog and soon gotten rid of. I "inherited" the 400 going to HS, and never was a car treated so rudely, crudely or any other way-- but held up despite low oil, used oil, low grade gas, lead footed teenagers and just about any other indignity. All in all, a tremendously reliable car--even if it did have to stop at every other gas station.

My grandmother had a 51 Chrysler which also performed well although it did have some issues with the Fluid drive transmission caused when she aimed for low range and got reverse at about 20mph. It didn't destroy the trans and served her for several years but did have a tendency to slip out and grind gears. Wasn't frequent but required stepping on clutch, trans to neutral and back to drive, then all well until it happened again.

I really do think cars of that generation were not necessarily that much better but people were used to taking cars to the dealer for the more frequent service. Who knows how many problems were prevented by something being taken care of at no or low cost rather than breaking down one day.

General:: Lots of trouble finding parts for my 53 and 51 Packards
Again thanks for the insight. I'm new to car restoration and preservation. I bought my first Packard as a project, something that i could help teach myself basic mechanics and body work. Admittedly I'm not mechanically incline but I love the oldies and I know that "Nothing is worth having if you can't build it yourself." My intention were to build a 50's style low rider, but after driving my 53 Packard around and being stopped at every gas station, corner store, stop sign and even in my yard. I realized how special this car is. Not just because its an old car that still drives with the original motor but as a testament and reminder that the past (although seeming forgotten) is alive and well and is constantly wanting to be a part of our lives. I know now that the past lingers in the corners of our hearts. I can see it when i speak to people and listen to the many stories about their parents or an old neighbor who had or wanted a Packard. I see how the old feelings and memories fill their eyes while they look over the old car. My Packard is a visual time machine transporting them back to happier times and trivial forgotten moments that are like diamonds now that age has bleached them almost from memory.

Thanks guys! The information is great. Rich Fox mentioned the Olds oil pump change over. And also the MoPar LA lifters. The plan is also for some custom Ross pistons so they are nice and light, but not un-streetable.

The motor is going in a '31 Dodge 3 window coupe. It'll be open wheel, and no hood, so the Packard will be on display all the time. That's one of the reasons we're using it. My shop is known for using mostly vintage power plants, and whenever possible, odd stuff. I've been wanting to find the right customer that would let me use a 374 for quite some time now. We have a side line company call Victory Speed and we've been making 374 header flanges for quite some time now.

If you guys want to check out some of our other projects, go to http://www.hotrodchassisandcycle.com and then go the Gallery section.

I'll post photographs of the project on here. I should have the body by mid September (it's coming from California) and the motor by the end of the next week.

Post-War (1946-54):: Checking Trans Level 52 Mayfair
Hello,
If you locate the plastic bottles that are used for hair color, they have a sharp tip that makes it easier to fill. I used a 6 oz bottle and squeezed in a few ounces at a time. It was the only size I could invert and fill the tranny without making a mess. You might want to see if you can find a small bottle and use a spout from bottled water. This way you can invert the bottle and then slide open the spout. I do this with my Volvo. It's the cleanest method and you don't need a funnel. Hope this helps....

Post-War (1946-54):: "Special" items when converting to 12 volt?
Quote:

In addition, this minimizes total drag on the engine, as the 12 volt alternator is running ONLY when the AC compressor is running.

and
Quote:

There is NO need to run the alternator anytime the compressor is not running, since the alternaotr can easily recharge the battery enough to replace the power used to simply engage the AC clutch, simply by running whenever the compressor is running

That belt arrangement makes more sense but goes contrary to what you said in your first post. Granted it won't be NEEDED unless AC is on but the alternator WILL be running all the time with this belt arrangement-- but the compressor won't unless AC is on.

yes "Lucas Trans Additive", one bottle is added to the trans fluid. It helps soften the shift and assists with the lubrication for the tran parts, it is compatible with ALL trans fluids, we use it in our Police Cars as the transmissions really take a pounding!! It also helps with minor trans leaks. Any good parts store caries it. Dale

12 psi radiator caps ok per Packard itself, BUT . . . [by JimGnitecki]

Post-War (1946-54):: 12 psi radiator caps ok per Packard itself, BUT . . .
I posted this under BigKev's service counselor posting on the "General" forum, but figured it was important enough to post separately too, so that all owners of post-war Packards could see it:

Per page 11 of one of the service counselors: When too many Packard started to overflow hot (expanded) coolant into the overflow line from the radiator, Packard itself advised the dealer mechanics to, where required, change from the factory 7 psi radiator cap to a 12 psi cap!

This 12 psi cap became the "standard" after a certain number of 26th series cars were built, and was permissable to be retrofitted to 24th and 25th series cars as well.

HOWEVER: the bulletin also said to check the condition of hoses, clamps, and water outlet gasket on the cylinder head at the same time, and replace them "if necessary". Translation: With 12 psi versus 7psi on them, the hoses, clamps, or gasket could fail if not in good condition!

The implication of course is also that the REST of the Packard cooling system can handle the 12 psi. That includes the radiator itself, the cylinder head gasket, the coolant lines to and from the heater, and the in-car heater core.

It is that last item that really concerns me on any surviving Packard. On my own Packard for example, the previous owner had replaced the radiator cap with a 16 psi (not 12 psi) cap. That had caused BOTH the radiator and the heater core (inside the car!) to fail earlier than they otherwise would have. BOTH failures cause trouble: the radiator leak of course can strand you and will require radiator repair or replacement, while the ehater core failure not only necessitates replacement, but also floods the interior of the car carpeting and steel floor with corrosive coolant, which does its nasty business until finally discovered, cleaned and dried out, and replaced.

Just a warning . . .

Jim G

General:: Service Counselors (or Service Letters) and Service Technical Bulletins
Examples of tidbits I found when I took the time to look:

1. Page 11 of one of the SCs: Packard acknowledged that some (did not say what percentage) of Packards left the factory with burrs on the sybchronizer for 2nd gear. This manifests as a less than smooth shift from 1st to 2nd. Cure: remove the burrs.

2. Pagee 22 of one of the SCs:Some 24th, 25th, and 26th series Packard had water temperature guages that read "too high" for owners' comfort. The cure? After about 6000 of th 26th series were already built, Packard added a "gauge regulator" to the back of the water temp gauge tolower the displayed reading! Then, they later changed the sensor itself on the engine! They warn you to not EVER use a COMBINATION of the regulator and new sensor, as that would give too low a reading!

3. Page 11 of another SC: When too many Packard started to overflow hot (expanded) coolant into the overflow line from the radiator, Packard itself advised the dealer mechanics to, where required, change from the factory 7 psi radiator cap to a 12 psi cap! This 12 psi cap became the "standard" after a certain number of 26th series cars were built, and was permissable to be retrofitted to 24th and 25th series cars. HOWEVER: the bulletin also said that the condition of hoses, clamps, and water outlet gasket on the cylinder head at the same time, and replace them "if necessary". Translation: With 12 psi versus 7psi on them, the hoses, clamps, or gasket could fail if not in good condition!

And here we thought Packards were perfect as delivered, and that Packard engineering took no shortcuts . . .

Jim G

1955 Packard Truck V8 in 2008 [by Jack Vines]

V-8 (1955-56):: 1955 Packard Truck V8 in 2008
Greetings, Packard V8s,

For many Studebaker-Packard adherents, it has been a subject of some discussion as to how Studebaker should have offered the Packard V8 in Studebaker trucks. There could even have been a deluxe variant Packard truck, a la the Packard Hawk.

To investigate what this might have looked like, I'm building a Packard V8 to go in my 1955 Studebaker E12 3/4t truck. For the first iteration externally it will look as if it all came from the S-P parts bins. Later, I may consider adding EFI and crank-triggered ignition.

1. 1955 Packard 352" bored to 4.070" for 364" (no misprint).
2. 1979-91 Ford 370" heavy-duty truck pistons with a cast iron top groove insert and a D-shaped dish. These pistons w/pins weigh 173 grams more than a standard Packard 352" piston w/pin. They have to have .050" taken off the top and .1875" off inside each pin boss.
3. G'day Eric and David, the top of the gear lever is not threaded. There is around 5 inches difference in the 38 Six to Eight steering column. I hve fitted a Six column to my 38 Eight as I wanted a bit more room to the steering wheel. It looks and works fine. Best regards Peter Toet

General:: Removing Door Lock Knobs.
I doing some work with the Service Counselors for an upcoming project, and I noticed there is an article in the August 1952 Counselor (Vol 26, No. 8) that describes the building of a MacGuiver style heater our of scrap parts. This heater was used to heat the door knobs to 150 degrees which softened the plastic enough to pull if off the barbed metal rod. So I guess the heat method is the Packard recommended removal method for door lock knobs going back as far at 1952.

Please read this Service Counselor (located in the 1952 SC set here on the website) for the article.

I too have had lousy battery life from batteries bought from the boutique battery companies. I had 3 or 4 of the Group 60 type for the V8 cars, and don't think I ever got more than 24 months from any of them and the warranties were esentially useless because you had to pay the shipping cost back. I certainly do not recognize this as any "standard" pre-war Packard handle. The ball at the end is press-pin standard for 36-37 juniors, I believe 35-37 seniors, and some seniors through 41, so getting a ball should be easy. the handle would not be a difficult, or expensive, casting and it would save you many many steps in searching. Brass would be easy to plate. Having said that, you would probably then start tripping over them...but if anyone knew what they fit, the price might be a shocker. If you need a referral to a caster I have had good luck with, email me at flackmaster@sbcglobal.net

1401 ? My recollection is that in 1936 the "01" series was still a legit SENIOR car, meaning wood-grained dash (for 1938, Packard tried to "pull a fast one" on its customers by calling the JUNIOR / "120" series an EIGHT, so these comments only apply to the question about 1936.

The photos these people are referring to (except for the "hot rodded" (lowered) '37 Formal Sedan), are all "120's" which did NOT have wood-grain.

For you "120" or "JUNIOR" series Packards, the correct factory original dash paint was a gun-metal "metallic" silver.

I think I have done 5 or so cars. Most were at about the level of this convertible. One, I bought as a parts car turned out to be better than the one I was restoring. So I switched which one was restored. I'd have to count to know for sure. I have done engines/transmissions for a 33, 34, 37, 2 38s -one 6cyl and one Super 8, 39, 2 40s, 2 47s, 2 48s, 2 49s that I can think of right off the top.

We'll just have to wait and see how this one comes out and especially if I can get it done for Branson.

Do you have the survivor story?
I think the 1941s were the only Eights (282cid) to not have chrome grille whiskers coming around the fender.
After 41 only the Six cyl were that way.
But then I have seen more 41-47 Clippers in books than for real.
DanL

I had that problem of "sudden changes in altitude" for a while on my '56 Patrician, and it turned out to be a bad box. You'd be driving down the road and for no reason it'll decide to go in "low rider mode". The wife was convinced it was possessed, and still does to this day. It turns out one of the wires inside the box had gotten tangled and was making contact at certain times when you hit a bump just right. I know it doesn't explain your situation with all the electrical disconnected, but it may help others in the future, plus it's a funny story!

HH56, I thought of that also. The solenoid piston with rubber end seats against the lip of the poppet valve assembly and not against the valve disc so the fact that the valve disc is cocked is not likely to affect the sealing off of the vacuum. I think that your first assumption is the correct one . The solenoid piston rubber is simply not seating against the poppet valve assembly.

find an oil gallery plug at the highest point of the engine and furthest away from the pump.
Either pour oil in the gallery or in liue of a vacuum pump pull in another car real close to the engine and attach a hose from the intake manifold to the oil gallery.

The last method can be dangerous if using another car for vacuum source. The engine must be stopped as soon as the oil rises so try to use a clear tube.

Pour some oil into cylinders.

Packard 12

What you say is true. The same thing was said to me when I bought my 55 Patrician, and the words were true and still are. However there is one mitigating circumstance that no one seems to take into consideration, very few of us working stiffs have the full purchase price of a done car at one time. In 1993 when I bought my car, I talked to a relatively well know Packard owner/collector/restorer in the Atlanta area about what it would cost me to restore my car to a decent driver status. He basically told me that for the 11K it would most likely cost me to restore mine I could buy one that was already done for around 8K. True enough but I never had the 8K at any one time to be able to buy one. So instead over a 4 year period I spent well over 8K restoring mine but it was a bit here and a bit there. True over the last 15 years I have probably spent over 15K on the car but still never had the purchase price of a done car at any one given time.

Just food for thought.

Alk

I just got home after driving past the remains of the Packard Plant, and whoever bought the smaller of the two entrances didn't waste any time -- it's already gone. Scaffolding has been erected around the "Packard 1907" entryway, so it's just a few days away from being gone too. Beyond the two radiator shapes on the Boulevard bridge and the bases of the two bridge clocks, there are really no other artifacts left at 1580 E. Grand. It's a pretty forlorn looking mess now.

Sic transit gloria mundi

Try the paint section in Lowes or Home Depot they sell a type of paint called Hammer Color in spray cans, It is a type that gives a look of a ripple coat and I have used it to coat antique trunks that I have redone,and it comes in different colors such silver and light gray that you might try. I need the bumper guards like the ones on Turbopackman's 51 without the cross bar. I'll check with the people suggested and see what I can come up with. Maybe replacing them is stupid. The ones on the car now are straight. Maybe I should check into having them replated. Chrome plating is so expensive I've been avoiding it.

I now have both front & back seats out. I also have been tearing into the engine. I have been dismantling the old engine, stripping it down to a bare block w/crank & pistons inplace. I'm dropping the intake,heads,& water pump housing off to be tanked & magnifluxed sometime this week. Also am trying to figure out what I am going to do with the exhaust manifolds. Nothing looks worse than a freshly painted engine and corroded exhaust manifolds. What kind of finish lasts the longest on them that doesn't burn off or change color from the heat? Also I glass beaded & painted the air cleaner cover & valve covers.

Hello,

Thanks for the extra info.

The engine oil has been replaced only a few weeks ago, the oil we filled it up now is 20W50. I think I will use the car for small trips and replace the engine oil within a few hundred miles. Then I can check if there is dirt at the bottom.

I will wait with adding extra products until this checkout has been made.

Can the ticking noise cause some problems for the engine?

I suppose it will take its time to get the engine complete free of its sleeping period.

Thanks.

Xavier

General:: Packards at Pebble
I had the pleasure of attending the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance yesterday. There were approximately 175 cars displayed including many rare and beautiful Packards. Most impressive, to me, was the 1931 prototype V-12 front wheel drive car in the Preservation class. I took photos of all the Packards and will share them with you all upon my return to Austin at the end of the month. It was a great show. A 1937 Lebaron bodied Packard was one of the three finalists for the Best of Show award. An Alfa Romeo won the award. Please stay tuned ...

There is another company but can't think of their name right now.

http://www.hydroe.com/

General:: Wheels
You people are confusing me with your talk of "rims" and "wheels". Hopefully, some of you guys can get me straightned out - I really honestly THOUGHT I knew something about automotive and light truck wheel technology.

It is my understanding that the entire American auto industry buys their wheels from MOTOR RIM AND WHEEL or BUDD. I am not aware of ANY American auto manufacturer who EVER made their own wheels.

It is my understanding that NO American car has used a wheel with a separate "rim" on their wheels since the introduction of the "drop center" steel wheel in the mid 1930's (the wheel's rim is welded and/or rivited to the wheel's "disk" and thus are not a "service" part). I should qualify this by noting that early 1930's Packards could be ordered with spoke wheels, but I KNOW they will not fit post-war Packards. In any event, my recollection is the spokes were WELDED, so you couldn't get the rims off the wheels.

Straighten me out, guys !

The grille is made of potmetal. So removing it is the best case senario as they dont like to bend or twist without breaking! The core support is the really the keystone in the front end sheetmetal.

The fins on the pumpkin are the problem. I'll tell you what I did just this morning to get my differential fill plug out.

Take a 1/2" combo wrench and use the open end on the square plug. But when you put it on, put it straight out toward the front of the car. Not like you'd normally use the wrench, but straight onto the top of the fill plug, just as if you were going to insert it into the fill hole. Then use a screwdriver in the closed-end part of the wrench to make a "T" out it. Just turn the "T" to turn the fill plug straight out.

I just replaced my pinion seal. You can see what I am doing in an "under construction" page -here-.

Just to complete the thought... if your fuel filter is full of rust flakes, replace the tank with a new one or have the old one relined as soon as possible. If you don't it will only get worse.

Eric, you are welcome if you are ever in the Western Pa (where all the good NFL Qbacks are from) area. If the Carib is running I'll let you drive it.
Tolandis, it was a good thought, but the V8 pumps are all the same and there is no way to press the end on further. The fan belt would not run true then as the fan pulley mounts directly to the adapter on the end of the water pump shaft.

Don't use the first balancer in your link, as it's 28oz imbalance, and will tear your engine apart. You need a balancer that's for an internally balanced engine, like the one I posted in post #16.

Even if "fully" restored (which can cover a lot of territory, or miss alot of territory) 10 years is a LONG storage as far as the hydraulic portion of the brake system goes. I wouldn't put it on the road and go 10 feet without completely pulling the drums, checking the wheel cylinders and hoses, flushing the steel lines, etc. If they were good before the linings may still be OK, but there's a good chance the wheel cylinders will need rebuilding at the least, and a chance of the same for the TreadleVac. If it had good storage, perhaps the hoses would be OK but if it were my car, I wouldn't take the chance.
