Eureka appears to have been the largest user. One custom bodied Brougham by Murphy for a private owner is pictured in the 1930 section.

In the 1930’s section, ’32, ’34, ’36-’39 show hearses and ambulance by Eureka, Knightstown, Henney & Derham. Commercial chassis wheelbases are variously noted as 145”, 150”, 155”, 157” & 160”. Best known car built on the late Lincoln K commercial chassis is the 1939 ‘Sunshine Special’ for FDR. Another late K commercial chassis of 160” is mounted with a Willoughby Panel Brougham body for a private owner, displayed in The Crawford Collection in Cleveland.

The book Lincoln and Continental, Classic Motorcars, The Early Years by Marvin Arnold has a production figures index with body types, commercial chassis numbers included for most years. The figures for most years are miniscule; small wonder no Lincoln funeral coach was readily available for Henry Ford’s last ride.

Steve

Ok, Lincoln offered no commercial chassis postwar. And with the last one being offered in 1937, 10 years old by the time Henry Ford died, and in extremely low numbers, it is no surprise a Lincoln hearse could not be located.

I have seen a 1958 Edsel ambulance and a 1962 Chrysler New Yorker hearse. That does not mean they were readily available. Or that you could locate one on short notice even when new, much less when 10 years old.

General:: How to Bench Test a Starter?
John, I tried to turn the difficulty of determining the rotary direction of an engine into an advantage. If the driver of the first version of a Lanz Bulldog wanted to drive reverse then he stopped the engine and started it the other way round.
Today's owner use a retrofitted direction gauge to be on the safe side.

The central question within this thread doubtless is how to bench test a starter.

As mentioned, one thing leads to another...
The backs of each front fender where they bolt to the front of the running board, were rusted, and there was no longer any connection.

So... while we were at it, we repaired the rusted flanges. Well, how much more work would it be to take out a couple of small dings in the hood and just go ahead and paint the whole front end?

Oh, and the paint on the cowl vent was peeling away, so we better paint that at the same time, and of course, all that's left is the grille surround.

I forgot about the headlights and parking lights. Since they need to come off the car in order to paint everything properly, and since they're such a pain to take off and put on, paint those too!!!

STOP!!!! The side mount covers will be done some other time, maybe when I get the rear fenders painted.

Modification Discussion:: lowering rear tl system
Somehow I'm a little confused and want to save you a lot of work. You can make the height of the car anything you want just by shortening your adjustable front pins or making even shorter ones. It is just like cutting the heels off a pair of high heel shoes--the lady is going to stand closer to the ground. Then you adjust your leveler to whatever rake you like and you are done.

Shortening or lengthening the front pins changes the height of the WHOLE car. The leveler only changes the trim. I regularly change pins on customer's cars to achieve the desired ride height--usually beause the bars have sagged (particularly 56s) and the car is already sitting low.

Heads up: TL cars that are sitting low do not ride well. Many folks have told me they can hardly believe how much better their car drives after I've brought it back up to standard height. But as the Germans say "Schoenheit muss leiden"---beauty must be painful.

Tuesday 9th March 2010

After picking up the resurfaced flywheel, rebuilt pressure plate and new clutch plate from Burt Bros left the flywheel and pressure plate with Graham Wilkins for inclusion in the balancing processes of the reciprocating components. Only trouble is Graham hasn't started on my 120 engine yet because he's snowed under with work. When he asked when did I want it, I enquired if the end of March was possible? From the look on his face, I didn't get much confidence from his "I'll try" response. But at least he has a timeframe to reference now. That done, off to the workshop for painting of the parts cleaned last week. And now off to see the granddaughters.

The water pump casting on all the mid to late 20's cars is an eccentric so never an issue to get belt on and off - most people just never have the water pump off to notice. (car also has not had a belt on it in 50 years so no pattern). Do not want a linkbelt on the car if it can be avoided. My NAPA is pretty good and did not have a listing but maybe the guy did it wrong. If you have the numbers maybe I can approach that way ?

I did however discover that I'm weeping a wee bit of oil from the full flow filter's return line connection. The line returns from the filter (see picture) carrying oil to the block near where the oil pressure switch is typically positioned. As seen, the orientation was very 'touch & go' back there. I've lost track of how many times that assembly had to be repositioned. (And then ultimately getting the distributor in there proved challenging too).

Anyway.......move forward progress again.

yeah so no ATF in the Ultramaitc, just plain old gear oil did the trick.

been rollin smooth around Holywoood.

i went to Pomona to find some '51 Cali plates... and the cheapest I found them was $450 .

seemed a bit steep to me.

Then a few gearheads suggested getin new plates AND PAINTING THEM the color scheme of the '51 plate , which is gold yellow with black alphanumerics..

so i think i'll be going vanity plate, and painting them. whats the big deal. i'll ask my buddy on the LAPD if a plate mutilation ticket is worth worrying about.

maybe orig plates might end up bein the cheaper option

$450???!?!?!?!!!

I would take a good look at the battery, battery cables and grounds. If the battery checks out,try a voltage drop test at ground connections. Also six volt battery cables are larger,so make sure they are the proper gauge.Your car should be positive ground.Also-oil and grease can work its way between the starter and bellhousing resulting in slow cranking speed.
If your wanting to add a 12 volt accesorie, get a convertor.
I bought 5amp one on ebay for $70.00.t handles the radio and lighter for cell phone charging.(5 amps is not enough for a cig lighter)

Check Hemmings for the sealed beam kit,you may not need it when you find your trouble....
RT

P.S
6 volt positive ground alternators are available,I installed one on my 38.Much faster charging at idle.

Working on the rot issues with the front door posts. This is the passenger side. By far the worst of the two needing repair.

Started with a paper template and cut a patch from some sheet. Got it tacked in a couple of places and just worked it into shape with some body hammers and some heat from the torch where necessary. It was easy to use clamps through the door hinge openings as well.

Hopefully you'll never notice it once the doors and fenders are back on. I still need to do some additional welding and blending but it's mostly there.

Project Blogs:: Portlandon's 1955 400
Well, its been quite a little while since I have updated any progress, so armed with a new digital camera, and some spare time I shall do so.

I have been dismantling engine parts, having them tanked, and painting them over the long wet, cold winter. I have also parted out another complete 1955 Packard 400 this last fall and have been sorting out what I need for my own restoration and preparing to sell the rest.

I have also been organizing the garage and building storage shelves to get parts and misc. parts up off the ground so that I can actually work on the 400! After building the shelves, my wife realized how handy they were. She filled more than half with with over flow supplies from her 2nd grade classroom! So.....I got half of my shelves.

Enjoy the pics. I'm having fun learning about the new camera. My wife and I went to our friend's daughters 9 year old birthday party last week, and one of her presents was a 10 mega pixel camera. I leaned over to my wife and said "Honey, NOW can we get a new digital camera?" She completely agreed.

Plus, the Motors and Chilton manuals have detail sections on generators, starters, carburetors, fuel pumps, etc. Their flat rate labor and parts manuals are good to have too, particularly for part information. The pre-war Packard shop manuals often instructed mechanics to see their supervisor for detailed information on a repair or operation.

(o{I}o)

Post-War (1946-54):: Frame crossover
One thing that comes up a lot is swapping engines, frames etc.

We all get the same thought when we first buy an old car. Gee it would be a lot easier if this thing had a late model drive train in it (true). So the thing to do is put a late model drive train in it (false).

The reason the second thought does not logically follow from the first, is that it is usually a lot harder and more expensive to change the drive train and chassis than to fix the one it has.

A beginner would not know this. A beginner who dives in and tears his car apart, is going to wind up with a wreck of a car and a lot of time and money wasted.

9 times out of 10, the car will never run again.

On PACA's run to the Vintage Motor Garage yesterday one of the vehicles undergoing restoration in the workshop is a '26 333 Holbrook aluminium bodied Limo. It had been cut down into a Ute(pickup) many many years ago and all that was left of the body was the radiator shell, bonnet(hood), scuttle(cowl), front pillars and doors(aluminium skinned) and some of the woodwork. The owner was able to find a divider window seat back panel which is being incorporated into the body. He also managed to obtain a dimensioned drawing for the body, as well as some pictures of a similar car now restored. That's all the restorer has to work with but he's doing a good job with what he's got to work with.

Many thanks 56 Executive for the measurement.

BTW, i will have to edit my above post about removeing oil pan withOUT removeing the bell housing half.
As it turns out i have a 2wo piece oil pan and had removed the oil pump before removeing the pan. BUT ,the Olds pump sets mush closer to the rear of the pan than OEM pump so MAYBE it is possible to remove pan without removing bellhousing IF OEm pump is used. Don't know. never tried it with OEM pump.

ZIS, ZIL, and other Packard Cousins!:: ZIS waterfall
Guscha is right on the USSR plastic, I mean the plastic details and knobs from the 1940s-1960s are thous things that get destroyed at the first place. The problem is that the engineers at that time thought that using vinegar acid(one of the components!) is a good thing and it was cheap and available at that time. If the plastic details decay they leave a funny odor in to the interiore.
The wheels cover starts to crack and the plastic kind of starts to bend between the metal wheel. It seems that the cause to the hole process is UV light and humidity. The ZIS plastic material for the wheel and other items is also used on ZIM,Pobeda, GAZ 21 Volga and also Moskvich cars from the 50s and 60s.

I can only tell that what I have seen and heard from experts, here where I am.

I havent seen any NOS plastic parts exept wheels for Volga,ZIM and Pobeda cars bun no ZIS wheels ore plastic details. Im not sure they made plastic things for ZIS cars as spare parts at that time? You engine is for sure a 1927 426-433 Six Engine.

I would have expected the '283' to be a body number. But that doesn't match with any records I have as a valid body number for any year. But something in the back of my mind says that those early models may have had a different schema as far as that is concerned.

Is your car a 1927 model that was perhaps first registered in 1926? Or perhaps the engine has been replaced at some point with one from a '27.

Do you have any pictures of the car?

Hi Stephen

Occasionally, in the late '60's - early '70's, my family had reason to go to the Buffalo Airport. We always took Transit Road at Spring Brook coming from East Aurora.

Being interested in cars, I checked out all the garages and used car lots along the way. I recall seeing a '53 Patrician with the Derham padded top at one of those garages then. I don't recall it's color, seems if was either black or gray.

No way to tell if it's your car I saw then, I hope so, nice to know at least one of the interesting cars I saw back in those days survives.

Steve

I was going to ask about replacing the oil bath with a paper filter but you beat me to it. The only question I have is did you have to cut or remove the oil filter section holding the kapok in the top portion of the filter housing or does the filter fit over without modification? I can't see how that could come off without grinding or cutting unless I am missing something. If need be I do have a spare oil bath set up from my parts car which I guess I could cut up but I really would hate to. Also thanks for the update on the cooling system rebuild.

Dave, the pleated paper element replaces the part that has the Kapoc material. No cutting, bending, or drilling. Just lift out the old part, clean out the oil, and install the new type filter. Stock looking from the outside, modern in the inside. More efficient filtering, less air resistance, and easier to maintain. What's not to like? I kept my old filter part, wrapped it in a plastic bag and put it with accumulating spare parts.

(o {I} o)

Pre-War (1899-1942):: 29 626 carb problem
Stripped carb down again this afternoon and found nothing wrong. All jets and passages clear, even pulled the little line on the back of the carb off and blew it out. After all I have done, have decided problem has to be in the air valve hanging open somehow. Noticed the light spring could get off to one side. Will pull air valve cover and get son to drive a chase vehicle and run it hard to see if we can cause it to die out again. Then check those air valve springs. Since car idles fine, runs fine normally, it has to be a fluke and that carb is so simple......... I have had Model T carbs give more trouble.

Post-War (1946-54):: Carburettors on 1948 22nd Series Export Six Touring Sedan
The starter switch on Packard carburetors has a ball and plunger in side the switch. The plunger has a cutout on the end where the ball is located. If this cutout or notch is not installed in the correct position the starter will engage when the accelerator pedal is floorboarded. To correct this problem take the plunger out and turn 180 degrees and reinstall and the problem should be fixed.

If the connection is sound then it should work, however if the gas or fluid within the cylinder head fitting and the tube has leaked it will not. My thought on testing would be to disconnect the cylinder head fitting(carefully as they are delicate) and immerse the bulb at the end of the tube in a container of boiled water. There are rebuilding services available for these gauges/tubes/fittings and others closer to the action may have names/details of these. I'll also leave it to the acknowledged experts for more detailed info/analysis of your problem.

And a request, could you please include your '40 110 Business Coupe in the Packard Owner's Registry here, together with a pic, any known history and how you acquired it?

And a further request, if you are agreeable, BigKev our Webmaster could move your post to the Pre-War Forum, making it a more suitable home for your post?

Dave, Thanks for all your advice. I wrote to "Mike" at Then and Now Automotive who has been most helpful. He explained that on occasion he has had to remove the diaphragm from the pull rod in order to get the rod off the rocker arm. I had suggested that I might have to do this in order to get a sufficient angle on the pull rod once the oil seal is removed. I have since noticed that I could see the pull rod by looking down underneath the rocker arm. I pushed a long thin screwdriver down under the rocker arm until it rested on the pull rod. I compressed the pull rod/diaphragm spring and pushed on the pull rod with the screwdriver and VOILA out it came! I should do a little pictorial FAQ on this in case anyone else has the same problem. I don't know why I wanted to save the old diaphragm but I hate destroying parts.

Look at Plate 31D in your parts book. The hoses go on either side of the Temp sender bracket and are supported by rubber-coated J hooks. There is also an aluminium strap clamp about halfway between the air duct clamp and the temp sending unit clamps - part 416293 (ref 15.858)

I just posted my 120b (1936) straight 8 plus tranny and rear diff for sale in classifieds. I've decided to go a different route on the drive train, namely Ford. Came across a low miles Ford 240 in line 6 (1965) with 4 speed tranny and rear axle 3.25. Some of my friends are now calling my project, a "Packford" (get it?). Anyway have already overhauled the Ford 6 cylinder during the winter and getting ready to weld new mounts and install the engine and tranny in about a month. This 1965 in-Line 6 came from a State of Kentucky F100 Ford truck and appears very promising for suitable drivetrain, less maintenance and future reliability. This 240 engine had gear drive and is historically known to go up to 300K miles. Because it was so reliable and successful, Ford changed the design and went to a 300 version. With extra space in the front (in the 6 cylinder versus 8), I will install 14 inch electric fan and maybe go new aluminum radiator. Also converting everything to 12 volt. I guess I am now in the modification class.

Old Cars Price Guide says $2280 to $11700 depending on model and condition, mainly condition.

The high price would be for one that is good enough to win a local car show, the low price one that is compete and runs but needs work. Most cars will fall on the low side.

OK, not original "bat wing" air cleaner, but if one had a Caribbean 2x4 intake, one could use air cleaners like this:

General:: Can old brands be revived?
There is no easy answer to this. Avanti, Challenger, Camaro, VW Beetle, and Mini Cooper have all been revived, and quite successfully. That is because these were very distinctive cars that were "modernized" into the current version while trying to remain close to the original vehicle. They also have the support, financial, and dealer backing of a large manufacturer (except Avanti).

Then there are things like the new Bugatti. I feel that this car has absolutely zero to do with Bugatti. They could have slapped any name on it. Maybach has nothing to do with the ones of the past also. It is just a big Mercedes.

Packard is a different story. The last true year was 1956. This is far less contemporary than any of the current modernized versions. Chrome, fins, and 1950's glitz do not translate well into modern car designs. If you are not using 1956 as your base, then what year are you going to use? All the ones in the first paragraph are based on the original version. What is the original Packard? 1899? Not practical or desireable. So everyone picks a year, or couple years, and translates their own modern version of it. Or they simply slap a few Packard design cues on a car that otherwise looks nothing like a Packard. Ending up with a design that few like besides they guy that created it.

Then without support from a major manufacturer, these unfavorable ideas have little chance of getting off the ground.

Hands down its one of the best looking Packard based hotrods I've seen. But I just can't be a fan of the headlights or the June bug paint. Yuck. The twin six is beautiful though. I tried to zoom in on the carbs, Rochesters I think, but they distort due to the Chrome. Nice ride.

Thanks guys. Since the waterpump is high on my list of repairs to get ready for this spring, the pump and ground strap will get done at the same time...
I also found a picture in the Air Conditioning section of the shop manual that showed the ground strap going to the waterpump!

Kevin

Let me know how that installation works out for you. I too have a carpet set from Kanters, AND IT DON'T FIT. I cannot return it as I personally did not purchase it myself. The carpet I have is at least 4 inches short side to side.

Al

Much as this b&w photograph shows (click to enlarge), I wish it showed more. Usually a fire engine is red but how about the color of this 1923 fire truck? Brian (BH), do you think it has the same dark shade of fire engine red as your dad's '75 Impala?

Special thanks to the webmaster of the New Hampton Fire Department for allowing us to redisplay a photo of their 1923 fire truck here on the website.
