A little update from my side. I was able to pull data from some of the various reference materials I access to and have added 472 different Packard Dealers(from 5 different countries) to the Master Spreadsheet. It's a good starting point!

Re: How long?

Peter Packard
G'day all, I am running 12V in my 38-1601 with a 6V starter, without any problems. I am using a 2.4 Ohm Ballast resistor from a 70's, 80's Japanese ignition coil to supply sensitive 6V electrics, such as fuel gauge, radio and Overdrive solenoid. It drops about 7 Volts but works fine. I have omitted the kick down relay and switch entirely from the O/D circuit, as the bored out 327 kicks violently into the steering column when kicked down on full throttle. I run two wires: One from the IGN on the solenoid directly to the Ignition LT. The second wire is from the SW on the O/d solenoid to a push button on the dash, to a feed from the 6V ballast resistor. Kick down is now gentle and immediate, independent of the throttle position. I have converted to Negative ground for all except the radio. Best Regards Peter Toet.

Owen,
I can't tell if you mean that or are being sarcastic. I am just an old electronics tech. Ohms law is about the first thing I learned as a kid. My Dad was an electronics engineer and taught me a lot from an early age.

Clipper47,
The number for #10 wire may have been a little off.
for #10 wire it's 0.00118 ohms per foot,
#12 wire is 0.0016215 ohms per foot,
#14 wire is 0.0025756 ohms per foot,

For 15 feet of #14 wire and the same 4 tail lights at 3.2 amps (0.0025756 ohms per foot X 15 feet) Times 3.2 amps for 4 bulbs = an IR drop of 0.1236288 volts. 6 volts minus the drop of 0.1236288 volts = 5.8763712 volts at the lights.

Still only a little over one tenth of a volt.

Re: Replacing the Window Glass Runway

I have never replaced the wind wings (ventilating windows). They actually look much easier to do than the rolling panes. The Packard Shop Manual gives a 'short method' that does not remove the rolling window or regulator mechanism.

But, this winter, you will have to take everything out to replace the runways for the drop glass windows. On my 41 Clipper, a runway for each drop glass windows is attached to each wind wing frame, front and back. It may be different in your 41.

I will pass through KC tomorrow going to a family funeral in Bolivar. We will pick up our kids and grandson at KC Airport.

Last time I was through KC was in June. I really enjoyed PAC Nat'l Meet Branson. Midwest Packards were wonderful hosts.

Later,
DanL

I received a reply from Steve Chapman. My e-mail to him today about providing him with information on my father's dealership. He was open to me providing whatever I had. I will get this information to him soon.

I also talked about the activity on this site to compile information on Packard dealers and was there anything he had that could help us in this effort. I have not heard back from him on this. I will tread lightly with Steve on this topic. Like O_D says it does not matter where the information is located, this site or another.

Re: Carter 644SA Question

I have the Carter specification sheet for the 644S and 644SA carburetors. It shows only 2 balls - the small one used for the accelerator pump suction (under the screen at the bottom of the plunger chamber) and the larger one used for the starter switch. Only a needle valve is used for the accelerator pump discharge.

Dave, not trying to put you in any position at all, so I understand your position.

I need to house the data in the database here to be able to integrate it will some of the other features here on the website, so I will forage ahead with the project on this side and when done will be happy to share what we have found. If you would still be so kind as to send over the 1939 info that would be great.

Thanks,

The 37 and 38 are different in many ways. However, in this respect they are the same.
If you don't get your specific answer, I will try to check my 38 for you in a day or so. My engine is in storage.
