Have you examined the gas tank for rust? You seem to be talking a LOT of rust particles. I have never replaced fuel lines but have seen some advertised that are fairly malleable to forming their way through the car. New lines seem a direct way to less rust. I hope you have a good cheap filter in the line and a couple of replacements. Catch that rust someplace before the carb. DanL

If car is stock, no damage will have occurred. Just place cables in proper order and repolarize regulator per instructions. If it still doesn't charge, then gen, reg or wiring needs some work. The motors are all wound in such a way as to not be polarity dependent & will work either way. Heater blower is only questionable one as some have said it runs backward, other say not.

I found the same thing in my 48 when I bought it. It also would reverse charge the battery, causing it to boil over. I just turned it around after asking the same things and it's been fine since. Apparently, the starter, ignition and blower motor aren't polarity dependent. Good luck!

There is no water or condensate in the line now. I had to pull the fuel pump and clean the debris (rust)out of the fuel chamber so I blew the gas line out with my air compressor with low pressure air back to the tank connection where I had wired on some filter paper to catch whatever came out. which was more of the rusty particles I had found in the pump. I did this several times, even forced some ethanol gas and diesel fuel through a couple of times but, I'm still getting rusty debris.
I'll try your bit with string and swab and alcohol and see what happens. I do have a new electric pump I bought in case my mechanical failed but changed my mind so I could rig it up and try that if all else fails. I cut a piece of the line off the tank end and the line actually looks pretty good inside and not rusty, so I gues the rust must be in the low spots. I don't want to even think of trying to route new line in there, I see no way to do it without a bunch of fittings.

Positive or negative ground ?

Quite a regular

Just bought a 51 Packard 200. The car starts and runs fine - but the BAT light is on and I do not think it is charging.
The 6 volt battery is connected with the NEGATIVE terminal to ground. I look in service manual and schematic says positive ground. Two questions please: 1. Is it possible / likely that a previous owner converted the system to 6 volt negative ground ? Is there a way I could tell if this has been converted ? 2. Can I damage anything if I just switch the terminals back to positive ground ? If the battery is in backwards, how could it run ? Wouldn't the starter motor (and other stuff) run backwards ? Thanks !

Yes Craig. Doesn't Oz have an amazing 'mis-spent' youth?
Even Fred and Barney would be proud.
