Re: Best damper puller?

I would think that the Damper would just slide back on, just as easy as it came off. After it slides on as far as it will go then you could use the bolt to snug the Damper down and then torque the bolt down. Just make sure the key way is aligned with the key. That's what I would try and do.

Sorry I don't about the size your asking, but I did read somewhere that the Cam Followers could be broken if too strong of a spring was used on the valves. Just throwing that out for food for thought.

Just wondering why did you take the Damper off? If anything this is a good time to look at the timing chain and pull the water pump off and pull the water tubes out and flush out the cooling system.
Just curious.

Felt? The way mine was breaking up I first thought it was just dirt and grim packed in there or some kind of cork. But felt sounds good to me.
Thanks Howard
JW, first I think I'll try a new seal if it still looks wet during the next inspection, I'll look into the sleeve, thanks for the suggestion.

Hi All, And thanks for all the input. I guess it would help if I could find a Packard Service Manual on the Bendix Brakes for the 1947 or around about there, but I haven't been able to find one yet or I keep looking in the wrong places.
First, I looked at and I am posting a picture from the parts book showing that the round washer (1.406) was used, not the football shaped washers like on other make of cars. I know what your talking about I've also seen them.
Also closer inspection of the shaft I've noticed a seal (12.0341) just behind the nut and washer on the axel. I would guess that seal should be easy to find, or maybe not. I can see it being over looked. (See picture with red arrow pointing at it.).
I was amazed about the positioning of the springs as far as which one is on top of the other and the bend in the ends of the springs after being reinstalled. I guess that's what separtates the Shade Tree Mechanics from the Pros.
Thanks again and hopefully in future this post will be helpful to future Packard Owners.
Wes

Bill, I would ask who ever it this that rebuilt your engine what he says would be best. I would guess he would know best and if there would be anything to void your warranty.
After that just make sure you retorque the head nuts a couple times.

O_D, that's what JW also noted on my Project Blog. So I guess I need to find the correct shoe or is that correct the way it should be and are the correct springs on and in their correct positions? Meaning is the orange spring the weaker spring and for the correct Primary shoe.

Hi, Looking for information on the brakes for my 47 Packard. Most of the parts are pretty standard, but I can not find why one spring is yellow and the other is orange. I would guess it has something to due with the primary band and secondary band. Could someone point me in the right direction.
Thanks!
Wes

Well I'm back, been doing some little things off and on. Took it out washed it off put back in the garage. Since checking the engine over, fill it up with oil, it started right up and developed good oil pressure from the start and all the valves are nice and quite.
Started working on the rear end, so I made a little video on pulling the hub. Got a new toy and it made pulling much more easier, no beating with a 10 lb. hammer.
So here's a link to the video, I'm a little rusty so forgive the mistakes. Also I'm using a new iMovie program and it's taking me a little while to get it working the way I want. I was able to include a video in a video now and it looks pretty neat, I think. Enjoy.
