Re: Model Identification

Thank you much for answering Owen, and the info. Well have done more digging and think I have a fairly good handle on things right now. I lost the ID tag from my Packard years ago when I had the auto painted and he removed the ID tag and lost it.
Anyway I believe my correct ID is a 1591-2050. It was a factory converted 1591 into what they called an invalid sedan with a removable center post. I converted it back to a regular 1591.
I just recently got it repainted for a price tag of $20,000.00 and yes almost twice of what he quoted me at the start. Anyway all painted and only one problem left. A really weird one!

Turns out I have two right hand rear vent windows. The one on the drivers side, the back side turns in rather than out. Did it leave the factory that way? Doubtful isn't it? But also since I have owned the auto for about 35 years and all inside trim was all originally painted the same wood grain pattern etc, what is one to believe? Anyway my problem now is to get the left wing working properly and finding the rubber trim that nobody makes. What to do?? A real problem!! So close and yet so far~~~~

Model Identification

Who is the expert on 1942 model questions? I am wondering what the main difference between the 1571 and the 1591 was?? There was only $150 difference in price but what was the difference between the two models,Model ID?? and how would you identify one if the ID tag was missing? Both show a 148" wheelbase. Is this true? Somewhere else they listed the 1571 as having a shorter wheelbase. In your data they both have the same wheelbase. Confused???

Can anyone tell me where to find literature on the R11 overdrive unit? I believe I am missing a part and need a parts breakdown and the Packard part numbers of the various gears etc. If missing a part, does anyone know where parts might be available?

Need to contact owners of the '42 model 2005 preferably, but perhaps any 160 sedan. I have no samples of the door weatherstripping nor the trunk sides & bottom. If anyone can help me enough to be able to perhaps match to Steele's weatherstrips would be extremely helpful. If you could perhaps draw a profile of your weatherstrip and how it is attached to your auto I would be forever grateful. I have a model 2055 but few of these exist but very similar to the 2005 model.

Yes I was aware of that also. Removed all the screws under the garnish and also all the screws below but dash will not budge. You say there are two screws on the end of the dash?
I do not see those.

Yes I know exactly how the gauges are mounted on the back of the instrument panel. But how to get this double mounted gauge mounted with 4 screws removed?? THAT IS THE PROBLEM!!
No way to just get to the 4 screws and remove it. I have loosened all of the screws I could find to hopefully pull out the whole dash unit in order to have enough room to get at the back of the instrument panel but it still will not budge. Have no idea of what is holding it in place. Up a creek without a paddle!!

Quite disappointed that I did not get any responses to my post. I have looked over the situation and I cannot as yet see any real plan of action. It all seems impossible but there must be a solution to remove the temp gauge from my 160. The immediate instrument cluster does not seem to be able to be disconnected from the complete instrument dash unit. Thus what's the answer? Surely there must be a solution that is feasible.
Since no replies, I guess I will have to go into this project COLD TURKEY which I hate to do. It means I might go through a whole lot of extra work that might not be required.
Will start advise or no advise in a day or two.

'41 & '42 160 Temp Gauge Removal

Can really use your advice. Need to remove the temp gauge from my '42 "160" to get repaired. Has anyone in the club done this? I sure could use some guidance. Don't think it can be removed without Gaining access the the back of the unit. How difficult is this?
Looks like the steering column would have to be dropped etc.

Still assessing the daunting task of removing a temp gauge in a '42 Packard 160 model 2055. Surely there must be someone out there who has had to face this task. I would so much like to hear from someone who has done it. I do not want to get off on the wrong foot and damage more than I fix.
To remove the gauge by removing the four screws in back while the assembly is in place seems almost impossible. There must be a better way. Please help someone.

Well thanks guys for the replies. No fun as you know getting under the dash and to try and get to the screws if you can. The underneath of my dash is so crowded that I am not sure I can get my hand to where I have to get, in order to hole the screwdriver to remove screws. But have to do my best and tackle the job. I will let you know how I come out and offer any tips I might gain in the process.
Thanks/Lee
