Re: Have you ordered from SMS Auto Fabrics

I would be surprised if SMS can supply a proper replacement for the original Mosstred carpet which is wool and glued to a thick foam rubber backing.
When I did the carpet for my 1949 Custom 8 I ordered Wilton Wool carpet from Bill Hirsch and bought a sheet of 3/8" thick black foam rubber. After carefully cutting the openings in the foam rubber, I used 3M spray-on contact cement to glue the carpet to the backing and to wrap the carpet around the edges of the foam rubber to match how it was done originally. The results were very satisfactory.
I used closed cell foam rubber with the thought that it would be less likely to absorb water in case it got wet. The original foam rubber backing looks more like open cell.

That tube directs air flow from the fan to the opening in the front of the oil filler cap in order to aid crankcase ventilation.

Mal,
Have a look at the back of the last page in your copy (page 6 of wheels and tires) if it says printed by Small World Press it is a reprint.
Packard did publish this originally but on fairly heavy paper that has a light tan color as opposed to the white of the reprint.

Interesting that the 1940 fan pulley is different from the later ones, however only the junior cars used a stamped sheet metal pulley. The 1941 to 1950 fan pulleys for the 356 engine were still a fairly heavy casting.
It looks like the later ones had a longer tapered section in front of the belt groove. Dimension on the one illustrated is 3-3/16' from the back of the pulley to the front of the raised ring at the front.

There won't be much oil left in the transmission after cleaning the pan and draining the torque converter, only what is still in the control valve and servos.
The cleaning cycle should take care of flushing that out.

PackardV8 beat me to it, but here are some photos of the T/L unit that might make things more clear. Removing the motor from the gearbox is simple and safe - just undo the 2 thru bolts.

The one in the middle for sure. Can't tell if the one on the right is also the same.

Re: Pre War Service Index Groupings

Since a lot of the service information relates to mechanical items it may make sense to split the groups into similar chassis types.

Twelves could be separate and 8's othe than the 120's from 1938 and earlier could be another group.

Sixes and 120's from 1935 to 1942 other than Clippers have a lot in common.

The 160's and 180's from 1940 to 1942 also hava a lot in common with the Junior cars but could be split into a separate category
The 1939 Super 8 falls more into the 1935 to 42 group as well since only the engine is carried over from the earlier Senior cars. Suspension, transmission and rear axle have more in common with the other 1939 models (except the 12)

A quick look through the articles might also reveal whther there is enough unique information to justify a separate category

Also is the original ground wire a 0 gauge cable or a ground strap?

Original ground wire was a heavy cable.

The original 115C manifold has a sheet metal shroud on the side that connects to the small hole in the carb mounting flange.
I don't know what Packard did for the Carter that replaced the original C-G carb,
