Steve - I hate to 'poke the bull' on this one, as I know it is a sensitive subject, but could there have been any authenticity question marks or issues with this car? Are these not the same models that are regularly seen at $200K+??? It's the old deal - 'when it looks too good to be true'?!?!? Chris.

Hey John,

Why not furnish the engine #, VIN # and anti-theft # as a set, and see if it falls into the known range for your year and model. I did that with my '39 Six and I think it was Dave (Owen_Dyneto) that came back with a list of known numbers in that range and mine fell right into the sequence, suggesting it was a) a '39 engine and b) probably original to my car. Chris

Thank you! for the responses, Guys. 'Cowl Lacing' - I knew it would have a proper name, just didn't know what it was. I will give Steele a call and see what they have for 'generic' beading and fasteners. Those photos show it perfectly.

John, you sound like my wife! ...I was only maxing out at about 55 on the highway.... seems to be the sweet spot for that six. I have Coker radials installed and she handles very well on the highway.... quite pleased. I put on several hundred miles over the summer and no major issues. (knock on wood!) Plates run out at month-end, so shall put her up on blocks and engage in a few 'off-season' projects. Having it on the road and being able to drive it this year has been a real gas! Well worth the expense of a rebuilt motor. Chris.

Hood seal rubber stripping... '39 Six
Home away from home

I was out on the highway the other day and the headwind was such that my hood started to flutter quite loudly at the back of the hood on top. I checked under it when I got home and see some small holes there on the top of the firewall lip, obviously for anchoring some kind of stripping. I looked through Steele's offering and don't see anything specific to that area and I can't come up with a part number in the parts list. I THOUGHT maybe a guy could put some nice, neat strips of adhesive-back closed cell black foam in there just to fill the space and not give the fairly thin metal of the hood, any room to flutter. I view this as somewhat of a jury-rigged solution and would rather locate the 'real thing'. Anybody know of a source for the correct rubber molding for there??
Or what do most owners do?? Thanks, as always for any help or suggestions. Chris

Hi John,

The machine shop guys that re-did my 245 had a spec-sheet with everything on a single page. I believe he gave me a copy and I have it somewhere. If Steve's Chilton sheet doesn't have everything that you need, let me know and I will do a 'deeper dive' for mine. It's possible they are the same thing though, as I don't know my shop's source on the info they had. Chris.

Re: Did Packards ever have a hood ornament that doubled as a hood-release?

This 'sort of' fits with this thread. I posted a couple of weeks ago about some Packard sightings in my small hometown in BC, Canada. Of the half dozen or so Packards in the 12-15 car rally, a couple were big 12's. They had the Cormorant, winged hood ornaments that doubled as radiator caps. One of them was adding water to the rad and simply gave the hood piece a half-turn or so, and lifted it off to expose the rad filler neck. I was blown away! How would this not become the most pilfered 'trophy' of all time, from a luxury car like Packard?!?!? I even mentioned it to the guy and he said they tried their darndest to make sure that didn't happen, but that it was a very real probability and threat if the car was left unattended even for a moment. It seemed very strange to me that a manufacturer would design something like that without some form of locking mechanism. Were folks REALLY that honest and trusting 'back in the day??? I can't imagine what one of those 'caps' would cost, IF they could even be found. I saw a Goddess of Speed for my Six on the net the other day for $925; very nice shape - but nearly a grand?!?!? That rad cap would have to fall in there and would sure be quick and easy pickin's for a thief!! Seems short on forward thinking by the Packard engineers. Chris

Geez, Dave, that is a beautiful interior in your car! I love the fabric - both the colour and the material texture. Looks very classy. Chris.

Boy, that sure sounds like the correct move, John! Then you'll know for sure what you have. Re the engine stand, sorry, I can't be of any help. I just used a wooden 'stand' that I built, but I was dealing with an assembled block, so didn't have all the access needs you will have, putting it all back together. All cleaned up and a fresh coat of paint and it should look pretty jammy. Good luck. Chris.
