Re: V8 lifter differences

Let the ride decide
Is that the "BAD" lifter, or the "GOOD" lifter for the V8's?

Maybe this has already been discussed before, but;

What was included in the Racing Car Equipment code "RC" listed for the 5662 & 5667?

What was included in the high speed car equipment listed for 5680 only symbol "HR"?

What is the TRW number for these lifters? Is it VL-13?

I am not a engineer, but the pump design has issues. The shaft connecting it to the distributor is a 2 piece design with a collar. The shaft is only supported at one place, and it is just a cast support, not a bushed support. You can just imagine the spinning and wallowing out of this area. A good place for air to enter the oiling system.

Some pumps had 2 places for support, when the vacuum pump was on the fuel pump. The PI fix was based on this idea.

The fix that Bob Aller used was to install a bushing in the top cast area, and a new lower shaft. He built a testing plate with a place for a gauge to test the pressure.

I believe this is how Terrill machine repairs the pumps as well.

I was wondering the same thing as BigKev. Was there an obligation to produce parts for a period of time after Packard production was ceased? The Studebaker Packard Corporation was still limping along.

I do not know if this is what you are looking for, but I had a 56 Clipper that had the downdraft tube plugged with a cork. The downdraft tube was tapped by the valley pan and a hose went to a oil recovery canister with a filter. Then from the canister another hose went to a plate that was between the manifold and the carburetor. I was told that it was to help your gas milage, on the theory that it would burn more of the vapors or something along those lines. It was also referred as an early PCV valve. I believe the unit was an oildex or something like that. It was a green canister. I can not find a picture of it, and the guy I sold the car to took it off.

Is it the car on the cover and inside of the 55 brochure?

www.packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/1955_2GreatLinesBrochure.pdf

It can not be the one pictured in the brochure. The pictures show electric windows. Allison car is manual windows.

If you look on page 18 is there 2 cars or one that is constantly being updated? The top 2 pictures show the stainless trim, but the electric windows picture does not.

Do the cars on page 6 look like they have 1951 hubcaps with cloisonne centers?

Look at Packard Service Technical Bulletin 55T-33, Dealer 24, July 14, 1955. The subject is service engines 55th series.......3 3/16" bore have casting numbers 446521...4" bore 440275.

also look at Service Counselor vol 29, no 5 May 1955, page 29 engine numbers.

I have not found reference to the 4 1/8" bore

Ross,

Have seen the red truck at PAC meets. You do nice work. I had always thought about doing a 56 Clipper truck. Can the rear glass be used as the back glass. Inverted (con-cave)like a El Camino, or would that take too much space?

Guscha,
I like HH56 saw the sign, but as has been discussed usually see it with a Packard sign when other period pictures are shown.

All of the show chassis I have seen picture of, including the 1956 Dallas show one, and in person at the PPG (2006 PAC meet) have been senior cars. Learn something new all the time.

Are there any other pictures from that Life magazine?

Greendragon, no grips on the steering wheel, and chrome valve covers, good eye!
