D.O.,
I can relate to your charging issues....
I recently had troubles with my 37 120C .

After a couple basic tests, I determined the issue was the voltage regulator and I had my unit converted to solid state and it works great!

Good Luck !

In an attempt to"give back" for all the help I've received over the years, I've got a set of pistons and wristpins that I am willing to give to someone who can use them. Please don't inquire if you planning on just selling them..(I could do that)

They are out of my 1940 Super 8 356 CI that I am in the process of rebuilding.
They are .060 over with oversize wristpins.

If you can use them please contact me at sapuckette at gmail dot com

Finally able to remove ALL oil galley plugs. The plugs with the shallow square had to be drilled out. I carried the block to my buddy's machine shop and we were able to remove them.
He stated they were the toughest to remove in his 25 years!

While in his possession, I had him check the piston clearance as the block had been bored .030 over. I'm also waiting on the main bearing clearances as we are using the original crank with the new block.

After next week, I'll be able to start the rebuild.

Thanks again for all the help!

Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy Holidays to all.

Thanks again, for all the suggestions and input......

Using the various methods suggested, I was able to remove all of the pipe plugs feeding the cam bearings. First of all, I soaked the plugs with PB Blaster for about a week. Secondly, I used a Mapp torch on each one. The final approach was to use an impact screwdriver. The plugs were soft and fortunately broke loose before the slots were completely deformed.
BTW, I tried the wax suggestion and it performed as well as the ones with the PB Blaster.

Unfortunately, The two main plugs in the ends of the oil gallery will have to be drilled out. They have a 3/8" female square that is very shallow. I'm not sure how the factory planned on removing these, but they are only about 1/8" deep. I'm not aware of any tool that will remove these.

Thanks again for all the help

Gentlemen,

Thank you all for the input. As soon as I am able to get back to the shop I will heed your advice.

Since there were a couple of different suggestions, I thought I would try each to see if I have better results of one over another. I'm intrigued with the wax.............

Regards and stay safe!

BDeB,Howard,

Thank you for the response,

There are two different types of plugs that I an dealing with:
1) running along the side oil galley are "screw driver plugs"
these have been impossible to break loose without destroying the slot. This is where I thought I saw a tool that allowed you to apply pressure in addition to backing out the plug.Applying heat may be the only solution.

2) the two ends have plugs with a 5/16" square female opening.

Howard, Thank you for the service bulletin. I wasn't aware of the oil regulating valve and it appears that it is behind the plugs, I'm trying to remove?

I'll continue to tackle this issue and again thanks for the feedback.
Regards,

I wanted I would reach out again...............I'm in a holding pattern until I get this resolved.

Any ideas on removing the oil galley plugs? It seems I'm seen a "special" tool for removing the plugs.

Thoughts?

Update on 356 CI Block

An update to the search of a 356 block......

After many months of searching, I was able to find a replacement block that fit the criteria of being very early 1940.........casting date of 06 29 39 with a serial number of C500140. It was in great shape with the exception of a scored cylinder wall.
After the block was chemically stripped, magnafluxed, it was determined that a simple sleeve would repair the score and the balance of cylinders were bored .030 over to fit a new set of pistons.

Today I was able to partially disassemble the original motor and will finally be able to continue with the project.

One question that I have is the removal of the plugs in the oil galley. I would be much more comfortable removing them and provide a through cleaning of the channels prior to the rebuild.

Any recommendations on removal? Heat? They appear to be very very tight as I was unable to budge them with a punch and hammer. Amy input would be greatly appreciated.
