fan belt installation

The battery on my 39 120 was way on its way to dying, so I drove the car to pick up a new one at Batteries Plus yesterday. (good price by the way - $80 for a Group 2 battery) On the way over there, as a test I turned on the headlights while driving about 35 mph and the gauge registered just below neutral. The generator has been recently tested at the rebuild shop and it is capable of turning out about 8 volts.
On the way back to the house with the new battery installed, I tried the lights again with the same results. My local old car guru told me that the old 1/2" fan belt was much too narrow and was riding in the bottom of the both the water pump and harmonic balancer pulleys, so the generator wasn't being turned at the proper speed. So I stopped by NAPA and bought a 19/32" wide belt that fits nicely in the grooves. However, it is a toothed belt, and is thicker than the old one. The bad part is now I can't get the belt on as it won't fit underneath the vibration damper, as there isn't enough clearance between it and the front frame. I suspect that the front rubber motor mount has done the usual collapsing, which narrowed up the gap. It looks like if I could raise the motor slightly I could get the fan belt installed ok. Question is - how to I raise the motor? I guessing that 2 short pieces of two by fours and two jacks might work, but has anyone else had this issue? The only other way I see is to remove the hood and hook up the hoist, but I'm trying to avoid that technique. Thanks

my 51 200 has fixed triangular windows behind the rear windows. I think only the Senior series had the pivoting ones.

1939 painting questions

I've now ordered the correct Arctic Blue Polly for the 39 120/Eight sedan. So a few more color questions:
1. Were the insides of the fenders and the splash shields in the engine bay painted black or body color? 2. How about the brace/mud shields - the ones that are perpendicular to the frame and fenders - what color were they? 3. Presently the fire wall and the engine bay is painted dark blue - is this correct? Thanks.

Try going to TCP Gobal to look at their paints - click on the Auto Paint Restoration under "Paints" and you can see a color chip page. They supposedly can match any older paint color you want, using lacquer, enamel or the modern stuff. Just be aware that they cannot ship lacquer to CA.
http://www.autocolorlibrary.com Here is the page for the 47 colorshttp://www.autocolorlibrary.com/aclchip.aspx?image=1947-Packard-pg01.jpg I just ordered some acrylic lacquer for my car - just be aware that the word "metallic" or "poly" meaning the same thing adds about 40 bucks a gallon. I'll tell you next month how closely the paint matches.

Re: "Goddess of Speed" ornament on a 110??

I had an original barn find car, a 41 110 that had belonged to a previously well off family in Alabama. Their fortunes had suffered during the depression, but they still had a Packard, even if it was a 110 sedan. It had the Goddess of Speed hood ornament, Deluxe radio, Deluxe heater/defroster, banjo steering wheel, chrome wheel rings, and override bumper protectors. My Dad used to ride in the car as a young man just out of college. The family had the plain jane six, but they dolled it up using the accessory catalog. Here is the 39 version; I suspect the 41 is much the same.

I also use 00 cable and soldered on fittings on both my 39 and 51 Packard, and they make it much easier to start both cars, even in the cold. Both the hot and ground in 00. Not stock, but easy enough to change out for a show if I need to. Also on the 39, I ran another ground wire from the frame to the engine. Belts and suspenders, but the Packard and I are both happy.

My 51 200 sedan had a striped brownish and gray broadcloth, which was wool. If you look at the "Packard's the one for 51"brochure, scroll down to the artwork on the 200 - you can see the stripes, albeit somewhat pixelated.

I think that Max Merritt may be able to help. Is this the item you're talking about?
