Re: Proper psi at carburator

Court, I'm going to give my regulator a check and see if its doing what it is SUPPOSED be doing. If it isn't, I suppose I'm going to have to go with something else. I may just go ahead and rebuild the mechanical pump, as long as I can find a rebuild kit that isn't old stock off-the-dusty-shelf. I just want my baby to run dependably!

I've replaced the electric bellows type that was on her with a rotary style pump. It was already set up for an electric, the mechanical pump having been bypassed some time ago. The fuel filter is a modern inline type that I just replaced last week. Fuel tank has been purged and sealed and all of the lines have been replaced (modern fuel line that ethanol won't eat up, not flex line). I'm going to pull the top off of the carb and re-check my float level. It's acting like it isn't getting enough fuel, however I can't run the pump without the regulator, it puts too much in and floods the carb. I'm figuring that someone that owned my car before me replaced the stock mechanical pump with the electric because they couldn't find a rebuild for it. I would be worried about a rebuild kit that didn't have gaskets and bellows that would get chewed up by the ethanol in new gas. I've already replaced the bellows type electric twice, and done two rebuilds as well. I didn't know about the ethanol issues at the time.

Proper psi at carburator

Hi all. I had to put a pressure regulator inline at the front of my carb. I have it dialed all the way up (5.5 psi), however the carb still runs out of fuel when I go uphill or faster than about thirty mph or so. New fuel filters, hose and pump. Everything I've read on this site indicates 4 psi should be sufficient. Any ideas? Thanks,

Scott

Well, just got new plugs as well. The plugs that were in her were too cool of a range. Hopefully, everything goes well tomorrow. Change the plugs, adjust the timing and carb, and I've got my fingers crossed! By the way, Owen, you should see the octane level ratings here in utah. From all the traveling that I've done in the past year, we have the lowest octane fuel out of ANY state I've been in! Thanks again all!

I hate to have to do this, however, I'm going to have to put my '57 Clipper up for sale. I just can't afford to do the work necessary to my '53 and work on this one as well. If anyone is interested, please PM me. I'm going to put her up for $800.00 or best offer. I have the replacement tail lights, and the car does run. She has the stock 289 V-8, along with a fully functional supercharger. Apparently there were only app. 483 of these made. I'm guessing that there are less than fifty still roadworthy. Aside from where some idiot rear-ended her (thus the replacement lights) the rest of the body is straight as a pin, only surface rust. All of the chrome is there, unfortunately, no hubcaps. She does need a windshield and some other pieces of glass. I have a bunch of pics, along with a video clip of her running. I was planning on replacing the stock rims with customs. I'm going to re-post this in the for sale forum. Thanks,

Scott

A few years back, I had a little gal that I worked with come up to me and ask me if I could take a look at her car (It was a '76 Ford T-Bird). She said that every time she turned on the blower fan, the smell was so horrible that she couldn't stand it. Got under the hood and started laughing. Of course, she got a bit angry... I asked her, "Were you having some problems with your A/C?" "Yes" she replied, "How did you know?" Well, some idiot had figured out that there was a leak in one of the lines, so he "repaired" it with about four tubes of super glue! (The top of the compressor was filled with the stuff). I had to tell her that, barring replacement of the entire system, it would always give off that nasty chemical smell. Needless to say, she had a different vehicle within about a month. Aren't dummies just grand?

Well, everything has been replaced from the tank all the way to the carb. Changed out all the lines, replaced and moved the fuel pump and added a pressure regulator. Seems to be doing ok! Thanks for all the info guys! I really appreciate it!

Some people's children....

I've been saying this for years now: There are some people's children that should never, EVER, pick up a hand tool. Just replaced the plug wires and coil wire on my '53 Cavalier today, talk about a mess! The coil wire didn't even match the others and was so loose I'm suprised that my car ran at all. It DEFINATELY wasn't made for my vehicle! To make matters worse, on a couple of the spark plug wires, the guy before me had actually taken a carburator linkage clip, jammed it into the center of the wire, and then pushed it into the distributor! Third, he had run number eight wire under the air cleaner housing. It was squished so flat as to be BARELY one eighth of an inch thick. I'm thinking that I've been running on seven cylinders this whole time. I have often wished that people who don't know what they are doing, do it to a toyota or something like that, not a classic vehicle! I'm going to re-time her and re-adjust the carb tomorrow. More to come....

I went ahead and had a board made up to put in front of my '53 Cavalier, the basic info, extras, and the price tag for everything. The only thing I DIDN'T add (and should have) was that, despite the fact that my paint has a lot of scratches and such, its the original paint! Whenever I tell people that, it usually stops em right in their tracks!

Personally, I'm proud to own such vehicles as my Packards. Almost every time I get to talking "cars" with others (even people twenty years my senior and then some), I inevitably get asked the question "So, who made Packard?" Maybe its the fact that I have always read a lot, but even when I was a kid, I knew what a Packard, or Studebaker, or Desoto, or even a Pierce-Arrow was. In spite of all of these "wonderful" knowledge mediums such as Iphones and internet and such, people in general have become so ignorant that it's deplorable. For style and ride, I'd take a Packard (or for that matter ANY of the vehicle makes I've listed above, among others) over any five of ANY manufactor in the last twenty-five years. At least any vehicle made before 1973, YOU CAN TELL WHAT IT IS AND WHO MADE IT. I can't tell MOST of these modern cars apart, they all look the same! I never thought that the "Big 3" would be toyota, nissan, and suzuki! What a terrible loss...
