On the Ultrasonic cleaner, I have found out that it is important to rinse and dry the steel parts ASAP and I use a fogging oil on them.

They are so clean (hydroscopic), they try to suck moisture out of the air and tend to get surface rust very quickly.

Here is a before and after of a cam retainer I left in for 10 min. Probably could have been longer. Like the fact it cleans to the bottom of threads, keyways and bores and around casting numbers.

Ultrasonic cleaner came today.

It is a 6 gallon and works with a variety of solvents. I am using Simple Green Concentrate I got at Home Depot. Makes about 13 gallons I think and is biodegradable. The solution gets dirty in a hurry. I got it basically to clean delicate parts but I think I will use it instead of my parts washer to clean greasy/oily parts if they will fit. If you are trying to do rust removal you would need a different solution.

Seems well made for a Wuhan product. It has a digital heater and timer. Came with a basket and lid. 300 series Stainless it appears.

Blasted the covers to near white. I thought I was done but there were a couple of stubborn rust spots. I hit them again and they went right thru.

I gas welded the holes with a #1 tip. Now just need to clean them up and prime them.

This is the end of this thread, moving it back over to the blog.

Riki,

Great picture. Thanks.

Is the one you show on the driver's side?

And I am assuming it is off your 12?

Greenfield,

Here is the cover from my Pierce 8. I assume the Packard ones are similar, based on your description. Pierce is a little different with the water entering the middle of the cover.

I don't see where a diverter structure like this were in these covers.

Twelve water jacket covers

Sorry for the duplication, I thought I was on the blog.

I was working on the water jacket covers and noticed I had a small rust hole in one corner.

I removed a brass plate that had been soldered to the back of the cover in about 5-6 spots.

It basically serves to keep water out of the cover?

Is that supposed to be there?

There was an accumulation of rust scale in between the cover and the brass plate. Odd.

My Pierce 8 has a jacket with slots which helps direct water to the cylinder bores but this one does not do that.

I am perplexed.

In the picture, bottom to top, jacket cover, brass plate rust inside.
