Ken, there is a Service Letter that may apply. I recall it stating that a small amount of axle housing rotation during launch can result in the drive shaft needing to telescope just a bit (can't remember if shortening or lengthening) causing the sound. The resolution was to change the angle of the rear axle just a bit by introducing tapered shims with just a couple degrees of angle. Pat

Hello all. I too will be there scouring the acres for goodies and reconnecting with friends.

Also, I've been asked to hold a Speedometer Seminar:

Thursday 10am at the new AACA Library/AACA building adjacent to the show field.

My presentation includes history, technology, owner watch outs, and typical repair processes and tools.

Re: Deleting oil filter on a 39 six?

The tapped holes on the upper left of head began on 40 when the filter became the replaceable insert cartridge style. So a stock 39 Six would not have them; however, to overcome this on my six, I have a bracket that makes use if the two nearby vertical head bolts.
Cartridges available over the counter.

If you happen to find a Packard original cartridge style filter like those in the pictures the others shared, be careful that you don't have one that is intended for the larger engines with hydraulic lifters. That canister has a different bypass pressure to make sure the lifters and rest of the engine weren't starved.

Probably wouldn't hurt your 6, but better safe than sorry. The unit made for the hydraulic lifter engines will have a statement stamped in to the brim of the top cover.

Good Luck.

In general, the switch wasn't meant to be adjustable, which is why I chose to change the governor weights themselves.

In addition to deleting your redundant posts, next time consider searching first. As stated, there are many existing threads here. However, that doesn't mean you don't have to do some homework to figure it out.
Look thruand study the good parts books and service manual content on this site.
Good luck.

I have a complete junior Trans/R6 OD I purchased a few years ago with the plan to put in my 39, which currently has an R9. I no longer plan to make the swap. The units have not been rebuilt but shift and turn smoothly.

I think I have the correct solenoid and relay also.
