Max Merritt sells the extremely small copper tube and fittings that run from the sender to the gauge. Straight 8 sells the special sauce red liquid. Let us know how it goes.

This supplier just has the body and the sight glass if that is what you need. For the faceplate, you might have to reproduce one on a scanner/copier, laminate it and use that.

I recently replaced the sight glass on mine and got it to a working state. Here is some info (includes precise info about the calibration rods necessary for an accurate reading):

Re: 1929 640 Oil Pressure

Any chance the oil pressure line has blockage in it?

If the oil pressure line detaches at the firewall, disconnect it, and wrap a paper towel around the end. Remove the spark plugs and hand crank the engine over vigorously 20 times or so and see if oil is produced. On my 31 I did that before starting it and was able to determine that the pump was primed. If you're getting oil up the line, then do the same thing but with removing the connection at the gauge. If there is any indicia of a blockage, remove the line and clear it with some stiff wire and brake cleaner.

Assuming you have oil getting to the oil filter, then I'd have to believe the pump is primed and not the source of the problem.

Re: 1931 826 DL51 carb

One last thought is to make sure the butterfly flaps that move the metering jet up and down are working, and not stuck. My carb had sat for many years and were stuck in position and not able to move the metering jet. Once I got things lubricated and working as they should, everything ran much better.

The DL 51 is a very interesting design. Only used about 4 years on premium brands (Packard, Graham, Cadillac). Every car show flea market I go to I hope to find a big cardboard box full of them.

The T-handle is what you should see coming out of the bottom.

What exactly has replaced the T-handle adjuster? What is there now?

There should be a T-handle adjustment fitting on the bottom of the carburetor. That adjusts the idle mixture. Fully warmed up, turn the T-handle clockwise (looking from underneath the carburetor upward) till it starts to miss, then counterclockwise until its running smooth.

The carb does have an accelerator pump. Keep in mind, the rich nature of your carb might be a function of float level too, which should be checked.

Consider posting a picture of it.

Can you install custom fit guides to fit the slender stems? How challenging would that be?

I looked in the parts listing for intake/exhaust valves and saw different parts numbers for the 826/833 and the 840/845 engines. That leads me to believe that heftier valves were used for the larger engines. Perhaps what Kanter/Max provided you were valves for the standard 8. I'd suggest you get on the horn with them and see if they supplied you with the right part. Seems a tad too small.

My suspicion is the coating used a few years ago is degrading. Try siphoning some gas out of the tank and see if you have junk floating around in it.
