I had the same problem with my cap and rotor after ruling out the housing and shaft runout. Found the problem was the rotor itself the fit that goes over the shaft was oversize the rotor would rock on the shaft and hit the posts on the cap. After checking several old used rotors on the shaft found the NEW rotor hole was larger and allowed to much movement. Guess we all assume the new parts we purchase are of the same quality standards as the orignal name brand OEM parts. Looked on Ebay found a orignal Delco still sealed in paper and metal box.

A little information on old radios if you have a old friend as I have who is interested in radios as he repaired my radio with all new parts capacitors and tubes and it works as well as new. Tubes are easily located as per my friend Russia is a source of new parts as they are still produced there and a standard is used making parts not a problem. All you need is a friend the radio information wiring diaghram makes it easier for them

Another old trick to hold gasket to oil pan is to use thread at the pan bolt holes when bolts are tighten the thread breaks and can be pulled out. Always worked for me easy to use on transmission pan gaskets also.

I have had four Mercury's was more than satisfied with each one. The one thing I liked best was that the dealers that I used provided better service than ford dealers. My feeling was that Lincoln Mercury dealers had more Lincoln attitude toward customers than Ford dealers. May have been just the ones I dealt with seemed to be more interested in the customer being satisfied. This is my feeling as I usually found that the higher price car dealers were more likely to satisfy the buyers.

I heard that Packard is having a hard time getting the supplier of the linkage as they have moved to India or some other off shore location. To get washers made in the USA is proving rather difficult. The problem that most are having calling the dealers or factory are the old phone numbers do not have a area code and usually limited to fewer numbers than currently used.
I have forwarded the clip to some friends all who think it is very funny and entertaining
