Tom, the latter. However, apparently in '37 Packard used a screw-together type shackle vice a rubber bushed shackle.

Mal, actually, the Super 8 shackles are the same as mine. I didn't find anything in the '37 manual I have, but when I took a look in the '38 manual that covers '37, it referred me to this illustration the Super 8 portion of the manual. It would appear that I need two grease seals on each bolt for a total of eight.

Since I don't have a fancy punch tool for cutting cork gaskets, I'm going to go to the hardware store and see if I can find something. If that doesn't work, I'll look into other sources.

Any tips or hints I need to know on putting these kind of shackles back together? It seems pretty simple, but it seems it could be easy to assemble the shackle incorrectly such that the rear suspension binds up.

Organic washers on rear leaf spring shackles?

When I took the shackles off of my 115c, I think I found the remmnents of a cork washer of some sort between the shackle pieces and the leaf spring. Is there supposed to be anything like that? If so, what's it made of and does it go between the shackle plates and frame/spring bushing on both bolts and plates or just on one end?

No, at least I don't think so. On the exhaust manifold there is a flapper valve with a weight on one side and a bi-metallic spring on the other.

JW- do you have the carter carb on your car? If so, could you send me some pictures of the line for the choke, and also vacuum line routing? Thanks a bunch!

Question on my '37 115c intake manifold. What's the little bracket? What's missing from it, because something is loose. Is it where the heat riser to the carter automatic choke gets it's heat?

Yeah, the weight was a concern of course. I'm not going to modify my 115 at all, I was just bench racing one night. I think the way to go would be find a rodded out Super 8 like the one Rusty had a link for earlier in the thread. The problems with the mod:

Frame mods would most likely be required.

Keeping it cool especially with an inter-cooler might be challenging.

The size of the tranny might necessitate firewall and floorboard mods.

All those mods are certainly possible, but I would hate to hack up a Packard that much, especially prewar, unless it was one that was already ruined.

As far as the engine, not sure what the follow on the the 6BTA is titled, but it is a common rail diesel motor, which eliminates the mechanical injectors and the heavy equipment sound.

A CAT diesel would be cool, but perhaps harder to fit a car transmission to.

Another advantage of the Cummins is that you buy a rolled Dodge pickup and salvage the engine, tranny, computers, partial wiring harness, etc. etc. It would cost a pretty penny, but the 10k there could easily be spent if you went a little crazy building a big block and tranny.

Obviously a big money project that I'll 99% never undertake, but it is fun to dream.

Front end re-assembly

Putting the front end of my '37 back together. Is the bushing that attaches the lower control arm to the center of the frame and the center link bracket a press fit? Also, does it need to be finely aligned, or just roughly aligned on assembly?

My thought was to mockup the assembly (I didn't remove the kingpin or lower control arm outer bearing as both felt tight), eyeball the alignment, and then put a very light coating of grease on the bushing and then drive to "press" it together with a vice (using a deep impact socket to press on the outer steel sleeve).

Any advice is welcome.

Also, the center post is not frozen, but rather seems slightly sloppy. What is required for a rebuild/how can I tell if I need one?

EDIT: Disregard both questions. I took a look at the '38 shop manual and the Kanter catlog, which combined to answer both my questions. Thanks anyway!

Torque arm reassembly

When putting my torque arms back together, should I clean all the new paint off the ball of the torque arm? Also, understand the service manual says to dip the bashing in soap water prior to reassembled, but what about putting a little grease in the bushing?
