hey no cold start ,try looking at the 2 coil wires ,The positive ground car should have the positive wire from the coil running to the ground on the distributer not the negative one .The coil hooked up backward (normal for a "normal car")will still work but not as well and youll notice it when trying to cold start ,if it makes you fell any better mine won't hot start !

battery driving was the clue ,The generator turned out to be completly shot inside ,machanic noting that the rebuilders said the inside looked 20 yr old even though it had been recantly rebuilt .So I was probably driving on the battery charge with a generator that never worked .Now the engine ran smooth and had good power but then I had problems with the car at highr rpms .stuttered .The coild it turns out was wired backward with t6he neg pole goig to the distributer rather than the positive like it should be on a positive ground car ,am looking for other problems .
I wonder if the pulley on the generator or water pump are the wrong size spinning the gennerator too fast and blowing them out?

Hello ,It didnt seem like it could be checked from in the car but the older cars with the ultramatic could be checked from the cabin by nature of a large panel on the hump rather than the 52's small round filler hole cover .I was concidering cutting a window and making a cover for it so I could fill and check the ultramatic without crawling or lifting .

Hello ,I meant repolarize the generator ,thank you ! how does one repolarize a generator? The mechanic I had before I movedto california wouldnt look inside a generator ,He would ask me to get another rebuilt ,I started getting the rebuilts and instaling them myself as its not too tougha job ,but with some tricks ! like the re polarization issue and the belt issue and the voltage regulator issue
,When I moved out west the generator had been replaced yet again , and started doing funny things i.e. light for the battery going on at at speed or sometimes when parked ,this is when I started seeking advice on your excellent site.I found an old car specializing fellow who would do the diagnostics on the car ,where most guys wont .He said its an internal problem with the generator that was spoted on the bench at a good generator shop that will mess with a 6v positive ground piece of equipment .I ve learned a lot from the posts
is there a piece that fits between the rear bumper and the supports? or behind the supports ? Ive removed the bumper for a rechrome and one spot had a bumper bolt ,castle nut and then a flat piece of metal that conformed to the bumper I wonder if I was supposed to have one on all six attachment spots ,its A 52

The heater core on the firewall ,they get plugged up with whatever from the inside of the pipes and then they dont work ,soif its an original part its likley jammed up ..is the line going into the heater core hot its usally from the waterpump or near it ? touch it .how about the line comming out .I replaced the heater core on my 52 ,it was available .theres also the oil cloth ducts that take air into and through and away from the heater core ,the one going away dould be warm if theres air flowing through it these bad bowy can get full of trash and not let air through them ,if you can use them at all theyve probably been replaced as they'd be falling apart

The knowlegable mechanic said that when one depolarizes the voltage regulator its the same thing as depolarizing the gennie .He took the gennerator to the shop and turns out on dissambly it was a faulty rebuild ,new brushes and pain but everything else was shot inside ,I was running off a charged and recharged battery this whole time ,bad on max merrit for selling me an incompletely rebuilt rebuilt repeatedly ,the last one had a bad rotor that fell apart and the one before that was a baddie too !
Now to find out if the bad component overtaxed the voltage regular or battery when itwas in from too many charge discharge cycles or low voltage high ampand heat issues .
I have a modern belt .I think the old timey belts were bigger and weren't torqued so tightly ,maby me and my small modern belt did the damage .there was a shiney ring insode the generators pulley where I had possibley overtightened the belt .It says in the manual not to use a bar but the be
lt would slip when I turned on the lights
Any belt wisdom?
I had discussed a 12 v conversion with the mechanic but he said that was a new harness and id just put one in so forget it

the important thing is the body and pans ,
everything else is replacable
/[see if she smokes ,that could be rings if its black ,or head gasket if its steamy ,engine rebuilds in thase old straight 8's are 2-3 k and the parts kit is 2k \
whats the milage ? 70-80k ? your looking at a set of front end parts
original wires? there cloth and probable vaporising if original that means shorts and wiring mysteries
korea war chrome ? they left out the nickle coat so the bumpers and grill will be pitted ,thats 500/bumper that yo have to think about
has someone alreAdy done some of the resto thats like free money that usually isnt recouped at a sale
most important is if the car appeals to your aesthetic

Re: Ultramatic Fluid Change

Hi ,I found the filler hole on top of the hump ,theres a small silver dollar sized hole that looks homemade of the driverside of the hump over the dip stick but its too small for me to get my hand in and unscrew the dipstick ,I wonder if someone in the history of the car cut this out ,I wonder if I should make it bigger so I can check the fluid from time to time without having to pay the mechanic ,I have a little leak where the shift selector rod goes in the transmission but was advisdd that the fix for that required disaASSEMBly and that Id be better off just buying some extra fluids,as it stands it seems really hard to check the fluid level from in the car unless theres a trick or perhaps lotsw of folks cut a bigger hole ,

would that be the same at the shift selector rod bushing?
thats where my 52 ultramatic is leaking and the tyranny guys dad, who was a tranny guy said, the trans has to come out of the car for that particular fix and id be better off buying transmission fluid ,on the right side of the transmission above the back end of the pan ,and comes in horizontally /
by the way The filler hole on the transmission hump is easy to get to but the hole for the dip stick is very small and almost impossible for me to grab the thing and undo it mmuch less unscrew it and pull out the dipstick from the hole to read it ,do people cut the hole and male it bigger>? how do I check the fluid level from the inside of the vehical without a lift ?i
