'56 TL issue, where to start
#31
Home away from home
Home away from home

Robert Freeman
I am somewhat perplexed by my 56 Executive's TL operation, or lack of operation. The latest issue is that the rear of the car seems to be stuck in the raised position. It was working fine a few months ago (both in auto and manual operations with the 3-way switch under the dash). The 'up' selection of the manual switch engages the solenoid, but the 'down' selection doesn't work. Upon inspection, all components seem to be correct, meaning that the compensator yoke is pointing in the correct direction.

I may have jumped the gun, but I got in a hurry and connected a 12-volt source directly to the compensator motor's down terminal. The motor turned for a few revs and then stops, leaving the rear end still in the raised position. It almost makes me think that the small retaining washer on the compensator's worm gear has failed (again ). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

'56 W/W Questions

I've had an ongoing issue with my w/w's in that they stopped working by twisting the control knob, however they do work momentarily when I push the control knob for the w/washers.
Upon inspection I discovered that the control wire had come out of the small end plate. When I reattached the wire, the w/w's worked with the twist of the knob, but they wont 'park'. Also, the actuator doesn't seem to work, either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all, I feel well initiated and welcomed to the fold

David, tell Joyce that I'm glad she's happy for me and that I hope that she and her family are well. I want to tell everyone that we are keeping 'Miss Hattie'. After all, I made a promise to Joyce and Larry that I would keep the car original and in great shape

I would like to report that with all the fantastic help you have given, the car is ALIVE and running better than ever
It turned out to be a simple matter of a couple of issues:

1. The short wire between the points and outside distributor connection had long u-shaped connectors that would ground whenever the distributor plate advanced far enough.

2. The point gap was way off, thanks to my failing eyesight.

3. The HT wires were not seated into the distributor cap correctly.

WOW - What an experience and I want to THANK ALL OF YOU FOT YOUR HELP!

I think that I found a problem within the distributor. After removing the dist. cap, I noticed that there is coil coating the inside of the distributer. I figure that isn't normal as oil isn't conductive and the spark couldn't make it through. What can be the cause of this oil and how can I stop this oil incursion (a seal, or bushing on the distributer shaft)?

I'm now at the point where I usually give up! I've installed a new battery, coil, condenser, and filed (burnished) and reset the points, but still NO START. I've checked the wiring and made sure that there was no contact with any distributor plates or body and the wires

Could I have done something to the OD Kick Down switch (maybe with the 12v connection or could the switch have been the source of the humming noise)?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Howard,

That makes perfect sense, along with my disturbing the wiring inside the distributor. I'll re-connect the extra wire to the coil (+) terminal and check the wires inside the distributor. Before I attempt any of this I'm gonna take a nap, maybe that'll help

OK, put in a new condenser, 6v battery, filed the points, but still no start. This while spraying starter fluid into the carburetor. Talk about frustration.

I am confused by the wiring of the coil. It has a new wire and connectors from the small (+) terminal of the coil to the side of the distributor, this along with another new wire that I think was connected to the same coil (+) terminal. This is one that I cannot find in the wiring diagram. The diagram only shows ONE wire from the coil (+) to the distributor. There is another wire from the coil (-) terminal to what I assume is the coil terminal of the ignition switch. The extra coil (+) wire doesn't run the electric fuel pump as I left it disconnected and when the ignition key was turned, and fuel pump switched ON, the fuel pump still operated.

There are NO OTHER ADD-ONS to the car, but it does have the R-11 overdrive unit. What could this other wire to the coil (+) be?

O_D and Ross thanks,

I do have a battery load tester, although I don't know if it works for both 6 and 12 volts, and I have to locate it. I think that I have a battery hygrometer, as well. The noise came from the driver side and I don't know for sure where it came from. I assumed the regulator, but it could very well be from the starter. I have some work to do.

If I remember correctly that the batter load tester will detect and identify an over-charging condition and the cell specific gravity test will show an undercharged condition. Am I correct?

Starters attempting to crank an engine when the battery is low will sometimes whine. I have never heard a regulator do anything other than click.

Thanks Howard,

I'll check with Jason about the regulator (or possible cause of the hum. The battery may well be past-it and will be replaced as needed. I'll also check the voltage of the battery while trying to start.

This will probably take me some time as I'm going with a friend to Andover, MN to pick-up my newly rebuilt heads for my '56 Exec
