Measurements for plug gauge to check tappet clearance

I may have found the problem with lifter noise after removal of several valves I installed 1 and found that valve stems are stock length and the lifter is bottomed out when the cam is at tdc on compression stroke. After putting the old valves next to the new valve the valve stems were the same . I was wondering if anyone had the measurements for a Plug gauge to check tappet clearance on 1941 super 8

1941 super 8 locate bad lifters

I had the engine running for about a 30 minutes. Pulled the valve covers off. with engine running warm I tried to locate the bad lifters tried slideing a feeler gauge in could only get it in 1 with a fare amount of force. tried using a stethoscope touching the block next to every lifter and do not here a difference. I did notice 2 lifters with more oil splashing from them than the others I thought they may be the bad lifters. I ran a direct line to lifters bypassing filter. the oil pressure warm is just under 40 psi. I want to make 100 precent sure I replace the correct lifters. I have an oil pressure pot I thought if I hook that up and pressurise the oil system may I could see the bad ones .If anyone has a way to detect the faulty lifter please let me know.

ok I guess i will hook it up like the packard service letter says. As I took everythig apart to clean it I noticed there was very little slug. The oil must have been changed alot on the door frame of the car there are enough lube stickers to wall paper my bathroom. Thanks for the reply

1941 Super 8 oil filter bypass

I finally got to work on the car I cleaned the filter housing and lines. Also removed pan cleaned that and the oil sump thoughly. Also took a 3/16 rod and stuck it in the oil passage from the left side of block to the lifter area. It appears that my engine never had the oil filter bypass line. I was wondering now that everthing is clean has anyone ever run the engine without the filter in the canster instead of using the oil filter bypass line. The origin problem I had was some of the lifter were noisy.

I made a push bracket to push dead cars in my Garage. I had welded a plate to an I beam drilled 4 holes and bolted it to the hitch and Taped an old tire on it works great. I also can pull the car out by wrapping a chain around the bumper and i beam. I also put a bungi on the steering wheel and stopped every few feet and adjusted the steering as needed.

Vapor lock has been happeninng at least since the 40s. I have an owners manual from a 40s car that i own that states how to start the car if it vapor locks. Its not a Packard but I was suprised to read that in the owners manual.

On my 29 I found that the water jacket gasket was not correct . There is a company that is selling reproduction gaskets that are not correct and the rear cylinders overheat. The correct gasket should be rectangular with a small area of gasket about an inch from the front going from top to bottom. That way the the water is getting forced into the water jacket. Some of the reproduction gaskets do not have that small area and it’s just a rectangular gasket going around the outside edge

There is a place in phila. PA they cook and clean you gas tank and coat the inside. They also do repairs. I have taken 3 or 4 gas tanks to them and Great service and great price. The name is Razzi auto radiator 215 884 9514. I know people send gas tanks and radiators to him. Another thing they may be reproducing the tank you need you may want to do a google search first.

Maybe I got lucky but I don’t know for sure . I was moving junk around in the car first I found a owner’s card from New York 1986 But it said nontransferable. A little while later I found another owners card from 1986 dated 2 months later than the first card. 1 big difference the 2nd card said transferable and was signed by the person that owened the car on the back but not the front. I took it to the notary and she sent it in. I’m keeping my fingers crossed I will let you know how I make out.
