Compared to some of the actions you were considering, just pull the head and re evaluate you situation . There are plenty of good threads on this site for pulling the head . You can then observe the condition and action of your valves . You can also check your cylinder ridge for wear .

Maybe now humbly order a new headgasket from mr Kanter for his earlier patience and efforts .

Thanks, I'm afraid that is what I am up against. I have a new sending unit for the 51+ era and was told it would match.

1. I have a replacement gas tank sending unit (8-80 OHMs).
The gas gauge reading are erratic. I ground out the wire from the gauge and get a "full" reading.
2. When I move the float to full, the gauge only shows 1/2 full.???
3. How do I remove the gauge from the dash for testing ?

I swiped that photo off ebay. I could not find a close up of a 39 120.
What would you want for yours ? They are for the 120 ?

David, did you ever get a chance to take the close up of the 39 hood trim?

Was this head originally on this block ?I would still have it carefully milled according to other's suggestion.

David, I would really appreciate that as it is hard to see detail in shots of total cars.
