Re: 1952 brakes. please advise.

this car is not a dailydriver. I use dot 3 brake fluid. since I have owned the car I have topped off with dot3. the fluid always looked very old and dark. Every thing worked good. then I needed a new brake light switch and decided it would be a good idea to flush the system.

the brake pedal seems normal. firm and does not go all the way to the floor. I just came in from working on it again. I filled the reservoir, tightened everything up.I started the car and pumped the brakes. pedal feels ok. topped the reservoir again. again the front brakes bleed, but nothing from the rear.

The car is up on ramps to give me room underneath. Now I noticed the brakes seem locked. when the car is running I put the trans in R and H and the car won't budge!

1952 brakes. please advise.

I have gotten myself into confusion over my brake issue.
1952, easamatic. Prior to this the brakes worked fine. recently the brake lights stopped working so I ordered an new switch. Because of reading info on this site I thought it would be a good time to flush and bleed the brake system.

years ago I worked on brakes on my GMC pickup,1948 and a '62 chevy.;;;;;So I have a little experience and have bled brakes before. I read as much as I could on this site and in my shop manual.....

I have tried everything to bleed the brakes . in the beginning I got a lot of very dark fluid from the front wheels, but very little from the rear. I used the typical method by pumping the brake pedal & I bought a hand pump mighty vac.....(only because it was very cheap)

I have been working on this for several wks on my off days etc. I guess I am confused as to what is happening with the system. BTW, I know I should really rework the entire system. for all I know it is original. But I am trying to put that off until much later in the year.

At one time I thought I read something about air pockets, but I can't remember where I read that topic..... thanks , tim,
as always I appreciate your advice.sometimes I hesitate to write because I know the info is in a forum already, but I seem to have trouble finding info when I need it....

I believe the letters are supposed to be painted red.
the actual emblem has a red background with gold emblem or crest.
I have a '52 as well. my trunk lid ornament needs work. chrome is gone as well as the Packard name is not painted.
I am told the emblem needs help. project 429....LOL
I bet if you google you can find a good pic of what it should look like....
good luck

Re: Turn Signals Not Cancelling

I encountered this same problem. when I got my '52 one signal canceled. A few times I had to remove the steering wheel for a signal issue and another time or two for a horn issue. the first time I took the wheel off I marked the position of the wheel carefully and when I put it back I paid attention to the pins and my signals worked as intended/. they canceled perfectly. but then when I went back for other issues I forgot about the positioning and now I have not found that 'sweet' spot . the wheel does not go down as far as it was before. and of coarse the marking I had faded. I used a Crayola......
someday I will get it correct.
I even cleaned the splines and groves etc thinking I would get a better fit.

hello:
I have a 1952 with the same symptoms. I have read all the posts thus far. I know my fuel filter is clean, the fuel pump is new. new points, condenser , etc. the coil is only a few years old.....
I will check my fuel cap again.
I have read other posts and I was wondering if I could have an issue with the vac. advance.????
thanks for the info.

hi guys,
I have a quick need of advice. my 1952 200 has a delco-remy distributor. # 1110825-2019.
When I look in the parts list on this site it seems that # , from what I understand , is not for my year of car. they post auto lite 4502-c
DOES THIS MAKE A DIFFERENCE? mY UNIT will need some service. should I cont. with the unit I have or look for a accurate replacement.
thanks

driving my '52 after 3.5 years of ownership

I bought my 1952 about 3.5 years ago. It has been great fun and has turned into a serious hobby for me. I'm not an experienced mechanic so I rely on study and asking a lot of questions.
all and all I drive the car now and then. and when I'm in the middle of fixing something I may not drive it or start it for a while.
I got the bright idea to sell my daily driver, a 1994 explorer.
while I did this I considered selling the Packard as well. I still have not made up my mind on that yet......
so, I sell the ford SO NOW I HAVE TO DRIVE THE PACKARD EVERY DAY. WOW.
I MUST say it is a lot of fun and has been the best thing to drive that car more than just around the block.

AND IT HAS NOT BROKE DOWN ONCE!!!!!
PEople always ask questions about it. It is running real well too. Starts fast and no problems with vapor lock.
the funny part is this is one of the wettest spots in the U.S, and this is the real rainy season too. That is why I was checking to get the wipers to work at their maximum.
I think this is a funny story. now I have no wiper until I get the motor fixed. I will keep the windshield waxed. LOL

thanks howard,
I will check in the morning to send the motor for service.
I took the front cover off and everything looked ok. your last post showed me what you are talking about . I'm not sure the motor moving the full range.
while I was observing the movement etc and looking at the pieces one of the pieces broke. So I may as well just send it out for repair.
the piece that broke goes through the middle of the spring and attaches at the bottom. too bad.
I will make calls tomorrow and check about repair.
thanks for all your help.
check my next thread "driving my 52".
I will tell a comical story.

my wiper motor looks most like the first pic HH56 posted.
I have been playing with the wipers.
I lubed all the linkage under the dash. I took the front plate off as suggested here in this thread. the motor still goes up and only returns when I turn the switch to the off position. I doing this with the wiper blades removed for less resistance.
I will go play some more.
thanks

BTW, my car does not have a washer jar
