That '34 'boat-tail' is frankly hideous, you can tell they used the hood from a '40's car for the deck! They might better have built a roadster-pickup.

Two extremely ambitious projects:
A '37 115 club sedan:

A '48 Super Eight convertible:

A very nice-looking '48 Super Eight, ready to enjoy:

This turned up on the AACA forum, quite a few Packards, all in need, all overpriced but enjoy the virtual tour:

Hi Dave

Would the late TPN 734173 possibly put it beyond the last 23rd Series Custom Eight convertibles at the end of 1949?

Do you have late TPN's for 1950 Super Deluxe convertibles that are in the same range?

I wondered that too. Seems if the fastest method to arrive at this car would be to begin with either the 127" wheelbase '48-'50 Custom or '49-'50 Super Deluxe convertible chassis frame and body structure as a basis. Re-skinning the quarter panels and doors with whatever door jam modifications and the 21st Series front clip would accomplish the major sheet metal changes. Adding '42 model year instrument panel, radiator grille and other details to complete the look.

The chassis frame and body structure are unique to the convertible. It would require considerable welding and fitting to make a 20th-21st Series club sedan body and chassis function as the same as the 22nd-23rd Series models cited.

It would be of interest to know how and what components they used to build this car.

Did this '57 Clipper come from the
Valparaiso, Indiana auction?

At a Hershey in the 1990's, while looking over a '40 Packard I struck up a brief conversation with an older gentleman. He volunteered he started his engineering career at Packard and had been assigned to the Merlin project. He was very proud of the job they had done preparing for volume production such a complex machine which had been largely low volume with a great deal of hand-fitting of components. Along came his friend, we went our separate ways, but still wonder who he was. Hershey is great for such encounters, part of the fun.

While this custom Clipper convertible not factory, it looks to be a fine job of creating what Packard should have then. It would be helpful to have the Thief Proof Number (TPN) from the firewall to determine what 22nd-23rd Series model was used as a basis.

The custom Clipper convertible appears built as the factory should have. Hope it goes to someone who will finish it properly.

Thanks Mal for the photos, looks like an interesting auction. The black 21st Series Clipper appears to be a Custom Super. More photos of which would likely be of interest to potential bidders.

Rust and overgrowth is the bane of automotive preservation the world over. If I didn't know the location of these, I'd think they were in the northeast U.S.
