gasket fit my windshield fine. it just wasn't wide enough to fit in the opening and capture the glass at the same time. it would either sit on the glass or sit on the lip of the metal...but not both correctly. the second gasket was a bit better, but not perfect and i was tired of jacking with them...so i siliconed it all up.

basically one of two thoughts...either the gasket wasn't right....or the opening in the car grew by itself magically...top to bottom. the window would sit on the bottom lip of the metal fine, but in doing so the top lip was not captured by the gasket. the gasket wasn't thick enough...plain and simple. garbage, but i made it work.

The 55-56 have a tendency to have to front/rear windshield openings "grow" due to rusting of the rear trunk area/body mounts area and the rear body sagging which causes the openings to open up. We had a car in our shop that had the original windshield and a 1/8" gap between the top of the windshield and the gasket. It had broken trunk floor in the area of the body mounts

The oil filter on mine is a sealed canister and was meant to be replaced as a whole unlike the ones I am familiar with that had a replaceable cartridge. As far as I know they are not currently being produced and the NOS ones I've seen are pretty expensive. Another option would be to get one that has a replaceable element and adapt that to my car which I might do but I'd like to be able to run it in the meantime.

We do offer the filter that your vehicle uses. If you are interested please contact our Packard Department. If you are able to keep a filter on the system I would recommend doing so.

Re: straight 8 & transmission interchange 1934 to 1937

The switch will not work. The '34 crankcase is cast with two "horns" which sit atop the frame rails. The 37 has no such "horns" and is mounted on an upside down U which sits on the front crossmember and attaches to the motor via a rubber insulated mounting to the timing cover.
The 120/Six are mounted in a similar fashion as are most models from 38 to 50. This is a result of the 34 with solid axle and 37 with independent front suspension and the vast frame differences.

The engines are quite different:

34 has chain driven generator and the crankcase casting is different,. 37 is belt driven and timing cover is vastly different
34 has oil cooler fed from side of water jacket plate, 37 is fed from a gooseneck on side of block.

I believe the crank, main bearings, rods, pistons, valves, lifters, cam rockers, lifters and possibly camshaft will interchange.

The transmission will fit both the 34 and 37

One thing that may help but not solve your problem is to rainx your windshield. It will make the wiper blades move easier and allow less effort on the part of your wiper motor. Obviously this is not a fix but it's something that will help and bead up water to provide clarity when driving.

My 56 400 had been converted to electric wipers by the previous owner. This had no effect on the charging system and worked flawlessly for many years. I believe he used a wiper motor off of a late 50's Chevy. If you do some searching on the forum you will see that there's others that have used it. The only drawback is it does not clear the large factory air cleaner. The air cleaner can still be installed but it will be cocked on an angle.

A 288 is not a Custom 8, it is an Eight which uses the 10" clutch which he has measured. Unfortunately there is no modern interchange that can be sourced local. We should be able to help or if there is a local shop that does relining of brake and clutches for heavy equipment and trucks you may be able to have yours relined. Please call our Packard Department if interested. We would have the pressure plate, through out bearing and pilot bearing as well.

With the ornament turned all the way, try banging the trunk on the vertical part with the heel of your hand. Common problem on V-8's

Do not let the engine idle. start the engine and immediately bring it up to 2,000 to 2500 RPM. Vary the speed by a few hundred RPMs over the course of the next 30 minutes total, stopping the engine after the first ten minutes to let it cool down. Re-start and bring it back up to RPM and repeat through two more 10-minute run sessions to complete the heat-cycle break-in process.
