Rear Wheel bearing Endplay
#31

Hi Packard people

I am busy fixing up my rear brakes and in the process had to remove the backing plates. The bearings seem fine, but I am replacing the oil seals.

My problem: how to set the bearing end play? With the new seals and the shims installed there is excessive in and out movement of the drive shaft - I would guess about 1 mm. Not the .004" -.007" specified. As I understand it this is set by removing or adding shims between the backing plate and the flange of the diff? In my case even if removing all the shims this play does not seem to get less? Will putting on the drum have any effect?

I really do not understand how the end play is set here. My biggest fear is that the bearing is not 100% correct as it seems to have been replaced previously. If the inner race is too thin can this be causing my problem? Can someone with a loose original bearing measure it for me?

Thanks a lot as always.

Regards
Barrie

Thank you very much for all the support! I have been away for a while, but at long last got the water pump refurbished here locally - it seems fine but sometimes it is making a soft noice still? Anyway, it will have to last a while as it was very expensive!

I also attended my first show - Angela's Picnic - a yearly gathering in a park to gather some money for the local hospice and cancer patients. In my excitement I forgot the camera at home. So no photos. I also discovered that the rear brakes is binding and is now busy rebuilding the whole setup after having resleeved the master cylinder. I am waiting for the shoes to be rebonded and will resleeve the rear slave cylinders as well. The rear wheel bearings is still good so will just re-grease. Cant wait to start driving around again!

Hi Michael
Yes, having acces to Packardinfo is the best resource you can get!

I must correct myself, the kit was already installed when I got the car. It does seem to work allright however. I will look for the old parts and box to see if it matches yours. From the foto it looks allright.

I still think you should try to get the whole lock assembly second hand from the US. That is what I did. There are lots of parts on the assembly you might keep for spares for later as these are hard wearing parts.
You have to remove the whole assembly anyway to replace the star wheel.

Hi Michael

Also, how do one actually attach these to the door and the woodgrain window frame? Glue...???

Anyway, can also get the straight ones here, but no nice curves as well.

Barrie

Hi Michael

That star wheel doesn't look too bad. I presume you tried all sorts of adjustments?

I think one can probably shop around for replacement strikers and wheels. Even purchase the whole assembly online at e-bay. I did that and received a very good condition star wheel.

In the meantime you might have to live with a door that shuts not very well, but at least stays closed! My driver side door used to open by itself when taking a left. Always a bad surprise! The replacement assembly off e-bay did the trick.

I am from South Africa and own a 1950 standard 8. I will definitely be interested in buying this book. Can it be purchased online from somewhere? So that it can be posted to South Africa? thanks

At long last mostly finished with the interior! I will try to neaten the rubber sill plates. New ones are out of the question as they are extremely expensive. I think thr color combination on the car worked out well even though it is non original.
Next project is to refurbish the water pump. It is very noisy and I am carefull not to drive the car.

I am busy with that game and it is great! Apart from the historically correct scenes and cars, the story lines are very good. It definitely feels like you are a detective in the 50's! I suppose....I wasnt born then. Also like the style and atmosphere of the game.
The company that developed the game is from Sydney Australia! I also enjoy the old time sirens for the dodge police sedans.

Thanks for all the good words!

I worked hard on Saturday, but it was very hot so I could not finish the interior. Here is some pics of what was accomplished. The running boards is old and worn, but replacements is definitely out of my budget. I think the tan leather looks great with the dark paint. The carpet is one piece with some sound deadening material underneath. It actuallly was easy to install the caroet a sthe floor is mostly flat with just a little hump for drive shaft.

Could someone let me know what was between the windup glass and the door frames? It seems to be a brush strip of sorts, but how on earth does one attach it to the frames?

I started installation into the car, but it now seems that my waterpump is throwing in the towel! It sounds like a coffee grinder. So a very expensiev one will have to be sourced. Found a place on e-bay for $145. The shipping here will be about $100!!! Anyway, hope that my old timer mechanic can fix it locally. Talking about using swimming pool pump seals etc....

Here is a pic of the interior at present. I lost some momentum after hearing the water pump but will probably finish this weekend.
