Re: 53 Caribbean
Home away from home
Home away from home

Mike Grimes
As with any item, a buyer and a seller decide the price.

In the 1960's many of our Packards were just cars with no dealer network to support their operation and maintenance. Therefore many received superior attention and well, many didn't.

Things to look for on a 53 Caribbean...check the engine number to make sure it is a 327 cu inch and in the series that were assigned to the 53 Caribbean. The engine number chart found on this website is a great tool for this question. For many people, these Packards were just transportation, so if there was an engine issue, the engine was replaced because there were lots of 288 cu in engines available. So I've seen several senior/Caribbean cars with 288's instead of the 327.

For the Caribbeans with power windows, brake fluid was used as the working medium in many cars. Brake fluid is corrosive to metal and over time many of the window lift cylinders leaked inside the doors. So check carefully the lower door panel and the rear quarter just behind the trailing edge of the front door for evidence of paint bubbles or poor repairs.

Check the interior material. The cars were originally equipped with leather seat covering. However, many were recovered with Naugahyde in the 1970's.

Check the condition of the top. A new first class top can cost $2,000 to $3,000.

There is a very large difference in the quality of the body work and the paint on many of the cars you mentioned. A body off restoration with a $25,000 paint system is clearly different that a car with a 1970's applied enamel.

The 53 Caribbean is a beautiful car and had few systemic issues. If you can find one without the hydraulic windows and seat, you will have fewer opportunities to spend $$$ on maintenance. These Caribbeans can be driven and enjoyed. I hope you can make a good home for one.

Good luck.

The dataplate is displayed in the last photo of the series:

5622-6433
Paint VM (Black/White)
Trim 11

I believe that the production number system started with the first car as 1000 in 1956, making this car the 5,433rd produced. My notes indicate there were 5,715 of the 5622 produced which would seem to indicate that this car would have been near the end of the assembly.

Great looking car.

Dick was a man of great knowledge, sound advice, common sense, and a willingness share his wealth of information with all. We've all lost a good friend and an Packard advocate who cannot be replaced. Condolences to Nancy and their family.

I have had two occasions this year to make a purchase from SMS. In my case all of the items were in their inventory and shipment occurred 2-4 weeks for one order and 4-6 weeks for the other order. Products are great.

Another easy to do item is to check the top and bottom radiator hoses. Another relatively easy item is to replace the points and condenser. You can get a shop manual from a number of sources. I use the PAC website, www.packardclub.org, and buy one at their marketplace.

There are a number of reliable part suppliers for your car. Enjoy!

Is their a NAPA number or other make/model vehicle's front brake shoes that can also be used on a senior 1956?

Agate is definitely not gold. The Packard Club website has the paint chips, however, as you suggest, the colors on the monitor are not always what you see in person. Here's the link:
http://www.packardclub.org/
Go to the Library section and then to the reference subsection and go from there. On the paint chip section there's a DUCO paint reference for the colors. Perhaps your local paint shop would be willing to make a small sample for you.
Good luck.

BH's point is very good. His comment caused me to think about taking my own advice. Here's a link to the auction results of a similar car sold at RM's Scottsdale Auction a few weeks ago. This is likely the best comparable out there. Remember that the RM price includes a 10% added buyer's premium. So the buyer's bid was $60,000. Hope this helps.

Antique cars are worth what a buyer and a seller say they are worth as the result of a transaction.

Given that as a disclaimer, the 2011 Collector Car Price Guide lists the 1948 & early 1949 22nd Series Super 8 120" wheelbase convertible, 2232, as follows:

Condition 3: $26,550 "Very Good" Good Amateur restoration or partially redtored

Condition 2: $41,300 "Fine" Well restored or superior restoration and some original

Condition 1: $59,000 "Excellent" Restored to current maximum professional standards in every area

Remember, its up to you and the seller to determine the real market number. Good luck.
