Re: Mike's 53 Clipper

OK, wow. I didn't know that that was the normal function of the OD. Like I said, I am still learning how this thing works. For me it is a crazy world of mixed up manual and automatic transmissions with normal gears and a planetary gearset....I will check the position of the lockout lever and see how things roll. Thanks Ross.
Any comments on the position of my shift levers?

Got the new pinion seal installed, and the drive shaft in, as well as the exhaust hanger that goes from the bellhousing to header pipe.
Clutch mechanism also installed with new cork gaskets (MBM-made by mike) but now I am kind of stuck on the shifter linkage.

Is the connection to the bellhouse in the proper orientation, or is this upside down? I have about 3/4 inch space between where the shifter linkage mounts to the frame rail. -Red circle and arrows-
I couldn't find a plate for this in the parts list...

Also, when I put the trans in any gear, the car does not roll backwards. The lockout cable is not on the trans yet...This is my first OD, and my book from randy rundle is still in the mail. When the shifter forks are all in the neutral position, the chassis rolls back and forth no problem.

Hey not-so BigKev can you merge this thread, and gregor's new thread "My new 53 patrician from eBay USA" when you get a chance?
Thanks, Mike

Don't know how many people are really interested in this, but here is a different solution. I put one of these switches in a 58 Plymouth yesterday with Gregor. The cost of the switch here in germany is about 55? (70$) from Bosch.
The 6 wires are pretty easy to hook up to power, ground and four blinkers/BLS the numbers shown are german standard pin numbers, but they are all on the round connector for the turnsignals (numbers are different for packards)
The knob lights up when the hazards are on, and so do the direction indicators in the dashboard.
The only things I don't like is that the hazard blinking has prio over the BLS, and the feel of the switch is quite plastic.

To remove/install a door, I would want a helper. The doors are not so heavy, but you should have one person holding the door up, and the other person removing the bolts that attach the door to the hinges.
If you can't find a helper, you can put a floor jack under the door and work with that, but that is kind of a balancing act. If you have a friend to help, that will be enough hands.

Take a number and wait my friend! My Clipper is first inline, but we should get your Pat going soon.

Re: 4-Way Flashers

Glad somebody can get some use out of my diagram. Like a said, the four ways stay on when the brake light switch is pressed, which is OK. In my situation, I was able to use the parking light filaments in the front turn signals for the four ways ONLY. (Because of other wiring changes I had to make for german headlights) If you leave that circuit still connected to the 'parking light' position on the headlight switch, you would have to put in a diode or something, otherwise the headlight switch will also override your flashing.

If it were up to me, in the US, I might sacrifice the lighting of the front parking lights for the ability to have four way flashers.

Here is a diagram of what I put in my car, as well as a picture of the switch I put under the dash. I took the positive from a body feed that is always hot, attached that to the batt side of the flasher (little tin can that makes things blink) then attached the 'L' side of the flasher to my switch, then the two outputs of the switch, one is attached to the point 38G that is on the round plug for turnsignals, and the other output from my switch is attached to the wire that goes to the front parking lights from the headlight switch. This causes the brake lights to blink in the back, and the parking lights to blink in the front.
In germany we have to have the parking lights (first pull on the headlight switch) light little lamps inside the headlights, so I disconnected the '6BL' line from the headlight switch and ran that to the new lights inside my euro headlights...You shouldn't have to do this step. But....now I am not sure if the flashers will work when the headlights are on if you do not remove the 6BL from the headlight switch....
The third pole on the flasher could also go to an indicator lamp, I didn't hook up a lamp though.

Hope this helps. Would be cool if you can find a single throw double pole pull switch that looks period correct, or that has an indicator lamp built into the handle.

All I see at Electro tech is turn signals, no 4 way hazard/flasher system. Did I miss the hazard retrofit Page?

I had to install flashers on my Clipper to register it in Germany. I bought a Single throw Double Pole switch and a second flasher can and wired it to The brake lights and The front parking lights. I can scan in my wiring diagram tonight. The only thing i didn't figure out so great is that when you apply The brakes, the four way flashers stay on with the brake lights.
