Re: 1948 288 coil

Good Morning...When we purchased our 1949 Deluxe, she was damn hard to start...we cleaned and tightened all of the connections, put new 00 (double naught) battery cables and added a second ground cable to the frame. We also added a fresh battery with 800 cranking amps and new plug wires. Cleaned the points, cleaned the tip of the rotor, cleaned the contactor on top of the rotor, cleaned the little tit on the inside of the distributor cap, cleaned the tips inside the distributor cap, changed condenser, plugs and coil and the old girl fired right up. The proper thick battery cables made quite a difference. She came to us with a wimpy battery and even wimpier battery cables from maybe a Pinto or some such! My wife sprinkled a little bit of Holly Water on the Radiator! Today, we run 87 octane fuel and use Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel, according to the instructions on the bottle. She'll fire up and you will love her. Ernie in Arizona

Good Morning all...This morning I had to go to the ACE Hardware for a few parts to support an Umbrella over the BBQ.
It's a nice morning so I cranked up Miss Prudence and off we went. Not a long trip and she obtained three 'Thumbs Up' along the way. She is now back in the garage and resting comfortably...Ernie in Arizona

Great Photographs, Jim...We'll be doing less driving about the time that you guys and gals up north begin to do more. In the summer, we're back in the garage by 8am or so...but still have a nice early breakfast...Ernie in Arizona

Miss Prudence ran about 16 miles today so that I could have my monthly haircut. The old girl ran just fine...A good Packard day! Ernie in Arizona

Good Afternoon all...I am wondering if we should have a category for 'Packard Trips' like 'Pre War and 'Post War' as a place where we can post trips long and short and how our cars behaved on the trip. It could be to the Hardware Store or 1000 mile road trip. It would be nice to hear how our Packards are being used...Just a thought...Ernie in Arizona

Good Packard Morning...Today's fuel is so different than what the Packard Engineers designed for...I don't know if they would laugh or cry or just get mad! I have heard people say that aviation gas is helpful if you live in a place where it is available...Ernie in Arizona.

Good Morning...Some of us keep Marvel Mystery Oil in our gas at the level on the bottle. I drive our 1949 Deluxe quite a bit and also a 1931 Model A Ford and I don't have any float trouble with either of them. However, friends that have cars that only are started/driven every few months do seem to have such trouble now and again. It appears to me that starting/running them on a regular basis is the key...if only around the block for five or six miles every other week. Ernie in Arizona

Wow...Your work is always impressive. If you take all of your posts here and at Packard Club...You have a book that a great many car gals and guys would love to read. Perhaps publishing a book should be your next project after completing your Packard...Ernie in Arizona

Good afternoon...Since the car has been sleeping in the barn for a while, start with a compression check to see what is happening with the rings and valves. 7 years ago, we purchased a 1949 Deluxe 'Miss Prudence'. Before we did any driving, we dropped the oil pan and cleaned it out. We cleaned out the oil pump which was full of sludge and finally set the valve lash to factory specs. We purchased several oil filter cartridges and changed the oil at 100 miles three times...then the old girl began to run pretty well. We also drained the transmission and filled it with 140 weight oil as it was getting caught between first and second gear and locking in second gear. Only God knows what was in that transmission...many people run 15/40 oil in the crank case of these old girls...check, clean and set your points properly and clean all of the electrical connections and make sure they are nice and snug. Flush the engine and radiator and then start to use the old girl around town at 40 miles an hour or so and also give the old girl a good lube job while changing the oil for the first time...they tend to wake up slowly...so follow the above and let her limber up. One more thing for safety..have the shop that changes the oil and lubes her, check the wheel bearings check the brake system to make sure it functions and does not pull hard to one side...just treat her like along lost girl friend and she will make you smile.
