I built 2 of these out of 2X4s to support the fenders and doors. Added wheels to roll around. Can be folded up to store. Inexpensive to male and have used on multiple cars.

The post about accidents triggered my interest. I've had arguments about relative safety of vintage cars. You know like drum brakes are as good as disks, etc. I looked up some stats relative to my 1949 Packard. The Vehicle Deaths per 100 million miles traveled in 1949 was 7.13. In 2018 it was 1.09. Ernie is right probably safer on a horse unless you drive within the cars safety limitations or use a trailer.

Here's an interesting graph I found by Dennis Bratland.

To paraphrase Tim Cole's comment a while back:

"70 and 80 year old cars have low performance engines without any safety features."

Unsafe at most speeds!

My '49 Packard Club Sedan project is finally completed after 6 plus years. It was not a "restoration" but more of a "rebuild". Tried to keep it as original as possible but unless you can find a car like this that has been well cared for over its 70 years it is practically and economically impossible. My car was heading to be stripped and crushed after reality set in for the former owner. I loved the design and couldn't pass up buying it. I was able to do virtually all the work myself which kept the rebuild cost within reason plus I had a lot of time to work on it. My work may upset some purists, but I did the best I could to get this car back on the road for people to enjoy seeing a Packard rather than the numerous everyday Fords and Chevys.

Attached is a link to a Flickr album showing the highlights of the project from start to finish. Click on the link and scroll through the pictures if interested.

Kevin,

The compression check you posted on 9/7 looked pretty good. You may want to re-check 3 and 4 to verify the compression to eliminate the possibility of a stuck valve(s). Good compression with the other 6 cylinders getting fuel would point to something electrical as Ernie pointed out. Is it possible that you might have a collapsed hydraulic lifter and the intake valve is not opening? That would be a new one on me!

Kevin,

What do you mean when you said "But 3 and 4 are not firing, despite the spark plugs working"?

JW,

I sharpened a short piece of coat hanger and stuck it in the alligator clip as a probe.
