Mr. Hawley
You have a great car there and it deserves the best of care. Since the demise of the corner service station and the service-oriented dealer, the options of maintaining your car have diminished. With some study the work can be done by the owner if you are willing to put in the study time to properly do the work. Here are two books that would help give you the background to do the work: https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/1935ShopManual.pdf https://www.faxonautoliterature.com/1934-1940-4th-Edition-Motors-Shop-Manual You will find lots of good advise on this forum but you should build your background to be able to at least figure out some of your problems. Best of luck with your project. JimKB1MCV

Ernie, I think three gallons of MMO every three weeks might be edging toward excessive?
I use MMO in the fuel in my 39 S-8 but my dosage is ~ 4oz. per ten gallons. But, if it works for you... Jim

You probably also should be aware that if you are using a DVM that that some of them tend to have some pretty questionable readings around our old cars.
Probably the higher quality DVMs are less prone to the problem. Even an inexpensive Radio Shack VOM will give you better results. I use a Simpson 260 just because I'm comfortable with it. YMMV Good luck.

Dave Flack,
Yes I would think your head must be spinning. I can only guess the owner of the collection may have passed or developed more serious heath problems. I viewed the collection a couple years ago when I bought a S-8 engine from the owner thanks to your contact information. I wish him and you all the best of luck with the disposal. Jim Richardson

Bob,
I THINK that is a coil base for a '39 Super Eight, on of the many one year only parts on that particular engine. It locates the coil on the LH side of the head next to the distributor. It also provides a place for the 'theft resistant' armored wire from the switch to terminate. Seems to a less than ideal place for a ignition coil, but it does keep the lead to the distributor short. Good luck.

You've probably seen this excellent video that Ross produced...
But just in case:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1Zc3aW18Z4 You may have to have the linings cut down by a shop with tooling to fit the shoes to the drum. Its a good idea on any brake job to arc the shoes to fit the drums. Good luck.

You'll get all the advise and suggestions you may want on your oil question.
You may want to locate a Motor's Manual and a Packard shop manual for the 1937 model year, they are extremely helpful and can save you a lot of work and grief. Have fun and good luck.

These people have an excellent reputation, haven't used them myself, but worth a call. I think they can fabricate tanks along with cores. Good luck.
