Hi

Thanks Mal for the museum photos which show the details very well.

Thanks Tim for the specifics and corrections on the period photos plus nuances of Packard model practices.

Kevin: "...they may have borrowed some parts from a factory 833." Kevin, You said the secret woid! With credit to Groucho Marx.

Although the body parts they used were from Dietrich-designed models, the combination here was not from the Dietrich, Inc custom body operation. That rear body section was typical of the Dietrich-designed, Murray-built production series as seen on the '31 833.

Point of this exercise is the auction company list "Coachwork by Dietrich" which it isn't. They would explain that as it was represented as such to them, they simply relay the information. Not outright fraud but a simple 'mistake'.

As we all know, the auction results from the sale of a genuine Dietrich and an 'invention' from period parts is significant. Although our examination here may not prevent the buyer from serious getting burned, if he frequents this site, he has a chance to learn the details.

Interest group of Packards, though as usual, do your homework before bidding.

For example:
https://worldwideauctioneers.com/listings/auburn-auction-2021/1931-packard-845-individual-custom-convertible-sedan/

"Offered here is an attractive example of Dietrich’s design work in the form of a 1931 Packard 845 Individual Custom Seven-Passenger Convertible."..."Coachwork by Dietrich"

Before accepting the auction company description, compare the this example with factory portraits of the '31 845 Individual Custom Convertible Sedan by Dietrich and the '31 833 convertible sedan styled by Dietrich but built by Murray.

I'll be interested to read your conclusions.

Steve

Hi

The manual shift with even the 288 would make this a better performer than the leisurely pace with Ultramatic. One of our region long-time Packard drivers swears by the 288 and stick since it is a shorter stroke engine, it takes higher revs in stride. Admitted one of his first Packards was a 200 with 288 out of which he 'beat the snot' and it took it.

Adding an overdrive would also make this drive even nicer. No relay is visible on the firewall, but anyone interested in bidding should question the seller if the car is overdrive equipped.

Good luck, hope it sells to a new appreciative owner, one who signs on here.

Yes, that's the '50 Custom, has been offered on CL for a few years now. He tries different venues beyond New Mexico. It appears to be a very solid typical Western car, good sheet metal and trim, original but worn and sun-damaged interior. It would be worth investigating if you are interested in one.

Might as well post this one, a mostly original '41 120 sedan in the clutches of a greedy flipper intent on extracting all he can with a badly over-priced sale :
https://maine.craigslist.org/cto/d/scarborough-1941-packard-120-sedan/7354062239.html

How can I tell its a flipper? Everyone of them can't wait until the car is unloaded from the rollback truck or trailer to take photographs and get the CL listing posted in anticipation of a big score. Shame in this case, this '41 120 looks like a good project start...if the price was realistic.

Wat_Tyler:

Your grandfather's '24 Peerless Model 66 was the V8 engine, 128" wb, $3,850 fob competitor for the open models of the First Series Packard Single Eights (136, 143). 1924 was the last year they were strictly a luxury car maker.

Going on memory here, the V8 engines for the Peerless, Cole and Standard were manufactured by Northway as was the Cadillac V8. Although they were similar, each was built to the specific spec's of the carmaker. All were introduced in the 1915-'16 years. Northway was GM owned company which eventually folded into the other engine manufacturing operations if I recall correctly.

For 1925, Peerless introduced the 6-70 and 6-72 that were price and size competitive with the Packard Six. Management upheaval from the early 1920's continued, deciding the company should broaden their model-price segment offerings with Continental-powered $1150-$1600 cars. The move only bolstered sales for a few years, began losing ground even before the Depression hit.

By the late 1920's, much of the public held an onus or stigma toward the 'assembled cars' which used proprietary engines that weren't of their own manufacture. That outlook was promoted by the automakers that did produce their own engines. By 1930, Peerless cars were all Continental-powered but the Depression was a bigger factor in their exit from auto-making.

Mention a car make...get a dissertation!

A '48 Super Eight, odd choice of rose-beige paint and non-original upholstery material but could be enjoyable driver:
https://spacecoast.craigslist.org/cto/d/palm-bay-1948-packard-super/7359948308.html

People are either keeping their Packards or advertising on another platform, slim CL pickings of late.
