Removing the Radiator on 1935 Eight
Home away from home
Home away from home

AJS
My car still like to run at close to 190 degrees, the weather in Los Angeles is not even near maximum heat. Its time to face the fact that the radiator needs to come out, and the water pump likely should be rebuilt. The question I have is can I leave the grill shell attached to the car and remove the radiator. This is when I will also rebuild or replace my thermostat and get the radiator shutters operating again. It has been almost 30 years since I worked on a 30's classic. My limited memory tells me drain radiator, remove hoses, hood off, radiator supports off, then remove all radiator fasteners and......? Thank you awesome forum board for all the help so far. Next up will be valve adjustment.

According to my temp gauge my car is running at 190 degree, this is with outside temps at about 80 degrees. Will I hurt the car operating it at this Temp? Thank You. Andy

I thank everyone for all of the help. I removed the oil cooler and it was not the problem, the gasket between the cooler and plate appeared to be bad. I cleaned everything up, made a new gasket and flushed the system and everything seems to be good now. I changed the oil and the old oil looked to be free of any water. I was able be drive it this past weekend.

1935 Eight, oil in the radiator
Home away from home
Home away from home

Hi, I just acquired a 1935 Packard Eight. Today was the first opportunity to really get it on the road and drive it. The car ran at 175 degrees with the outside temperature at about 68. When I parked the car I noticed a puddle of sludge, it had drained from the radiator overflow tube. The water in the radiator was an oily brown mix of oil and water. I drained the coolant, flushed it and filled it up again, more sludgy stuff. The car runs very smooth, no excess smoke from exhaust and no water in the oil. Any ideas? Thank you.
I have tried to search for the answer and all that I can find refers to a 1934 iol cooler leak, but my research tells me '35 was new and improved.
