Twelve water jacket covers
Home away from home
Home away from home

blue40devil
I was working on the water jacket covers and noticed I had a small rust hole in one corner.

I removed a brass plate that had been soldered to the back of the cover in about 5-6 spots.

It basically serves to keep water out of the cover?

Is that supposed to be there?

There was an accumulation of rust scale in between the cover and the brass plate. Odd.

My Pierce 8 has a jacket with slots which helps direct water to the cylinder bores but this one does not do that.

I am perplexed.

In the picture, bottom to top, jacket cover, brass plate rust inside.

Bob,

How much do you want for the rod you have?

I might be better off trying to duplicate an unmolested, but shorter one.

Bob,

Thank you very much for the response. I measured mine at 45".

I show '37 as parts:

230307 right
230305 left

'38 is 2 of the same part 240274

So as much as I hate it, they don't seem to be the same animal.

Thanks again and happy holidays and stay safe.

Bill

Lightly touched up the valve seats.

Machined a bushing to allow me the ability to cut them without having to put the guides back in and use a pilot that I already had.

Took less than a turn to get them bright.

I will lap and set the clearance on the valves once the guides are in, but you have to have the silencer blocks installed to do that

I have drilled and tapped plugs with a left hand threaded tap then screwed in a left hand threaded bolt which allows you to put a socket on it to remove the plug.

I am in need of a pair of the firewall to radiator rods for my 1938 1608 Twelve.

Thanks

Here is an interesting comparison of cranks.

Left to right

'35 Pierce Arrow stroked 8. Notice the cast counterweights

'33 Pierce Arrow 8, notice the heavy bolted and welded
counterweights

'38 Packard Twelve. Counterweights but precisely attached
and balanced. Beautiful piece of machine work. Shorter
than the Pierce 8's but 100 cubic inches bigger

'71 Morgan +8 (aluminum Buick/Rover 215 V8) Impressed by
how short and compact it is. It is almost as short as
the 4 cylinder next to it

'65 Morgan +4 (Triumph TR3/4)
