Is it the gearing and tire sizes that are off? Or does the speedo need to be cleaned and lubed? Has the spring lost some of it's tension?

The tires on my car are Firestone FR380 P225/75R15.

According to the Firestone website, they turn 736 times per mile. The owner's manual says that I have 3.23 gears so my engine is turning at 2377rpm at 60 mph. Elsewhere in the servive manuals, I beleive I saw it claim the the engine turns 2250 times per mile. That's a about a 5% difference.

I guess I need to find tires that turn 697 times per mile. The P235 would be better at 721tpm.

I took my numbers from the specs listed for the car. I'll look at the tires next time I'm out there, but the odometer seems very close for miles covered/ miles shown.

Anyway, look at the manufacturer's web site, they'll give you tire dia, rolling distance and revolutions per mile. You'll find that different brands and even different model tires from the same company are different even when the size designation is the same. Quote:

Much easier and cheaper to put the right sized tires on the car. Check the all the literature on this site. It will tell you what you should be running.

My '54 Super Clipper with the Ultramatic has the 3.23 gears. According to the manuals it turns at 2250 rpm at 60 mph. I'm getting 14-16 on daily driving, mostly highway.

I run super in mine because it doesn't contain ethanol, which will destroy the older rubber parts in the fuel system.

Parts carry over from previous year.

I was trying to figure out what the push/pull switch is for that is on the left of the light switch on my '54 Clipper Super. I believe it was for the electric antenna. But during my search of the owners manual(s), I noticed that I have the '53 dash cluster. The three round gauges. But the heater/vent controls are '54 style. The vin on this car is 5462-6754 and it does have the '54 tail lights.

Would they carry over parts that far into production? Or has this been replaced sometime in the past?

A problem like is shown there is from the difference of pressure from one side of the element to the other. And the pressure is evenly distributed around the cylinder and it's very hard to crush a cylinder like that. The only way for that to happen is if the media is completely blocked and you have much more than the normal 65psi.

The pressure relief valve on that car is stuck. The owner needs to get that worked on.

That, or that is the wrong filter for the car. Some need to have a bypass valve built into the filter.

And, if there is that much grunt in your engine that it plugs a filter that tight in 4000 miles, that motor will be dead soon.

I rented a trailer from U-Haul this spring to bring home my Clipper. They have two sizes, if you would go that route, make sure you get the big one. They are newer and made from aluminum. You will also need to lie and tell them it's a Studibaker because the don't list Packards in their data base.

I pulled mine with a 1/2 extended cab, long box, 4x4 Chevy. It worked very well. Quote:

My wife and I will be there from Colorado Springs. I hope that my brother from Oakdale, CA can join us.

I'm planning on trailering my 56 Executive if I can arrange for a trailer and tow vehicle. My Exec could possibly make it, but I have never taken it for more than 150 miles. It's about a 900 mile trip.

I hope that the people I meet up with can help me with some mechanical items.

I talked with my friend this morning and got some of my misinformation straightened out.

In 1970 he took an apprenticeship at Delta Dynamics Inc. in Suamico, WI. The man that owned the place was Carroll J. Lucia. They were making transmission dynamometers that used a Ford V4 for power. Their target market was trade schools. The company went out of business in April of 1972.

As Steve tells it, Carroll worked for both Packard and GM as an engineer on automatic transmissions. He didn't know what years, but the guy was in his early sixties when Steve work for him. At the time he also had a very nice Packard that he only drove occasionally. Steve couldn't tell me the year or model.

Here's a link to some patents he held.

.......where there is a quota.

Our esteemed police chief said there is no such thing as a quota in the police force---and then he went on to say if one officer wrote 100 citations a month and another did 10, he would be talking to one of them and find out why the difference. After budget hearings, he left no doubt as to which one he would be talking to. The city council was going to eliminate the officers in traffic detail and put them policing other crime areas. Chief stood before them and literally told them they were crazy to even consider it. "Do you people have any idea how much revenue those twenty officers bring into this city?? And you want to eliminate the program?? Are you nuts?? But there are no quotas and we certainly have no quota here. If you believe that, then I have a few bridges for sale--anyone interested?

I personally believe that the governing body that issues a fine, shouldn't get any of it.

Everyone in this great nation lives under four governing bodies. Federal, state, county and city/village/town. If any of those, or their agents, issues a fine, the money should be divided between the other three as a percentage by population. The issuer, gets nothing.

Raising revenue by issuing fines is wrong.
