Re: fuel to the carburetor

You should not need an electric pump. I have both but use mostly the mechanical pump on my Carib and it pumps just fine. Any chance the pump was not rebuilt properly and one of the valves is in backward or the diaphragm was stretched tight when the two halves were bolted together so it can't flex properly and deliver. The pressure out depends a lot on the spring inside pump pushing against the diaphragm when full. Is the arm on the correct side of the cam so it is operating the pump properly.

I did have the problem with the ceramic element on mine. You could blow air thru but the varnish had clogged the element so badly that gas couldn't deliver in enough quantity to keeps carbs filled.

If you have any of these items, there have been problems in the past with each and worth a look. The 8" long flexible hose between the steel fuel line to the pump inlet brittle or cracked on the inside and blocking fuel, the pickup in the gas tank clogged or possibly a pin hole in the steel line letting pump suck air, vent in the gas tank cap blocked, and the ceramic element in the fuel filter clogged enough to only pass air but not gas. Of course, the carb itself could need some work, depending on what it's not doing.

Welcome. The first suggestion would be to download a copy of the servicehttps://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/article/view.article.php?300 and partshttps://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/article/view.article.php?140 manual available on site here. They are also available in reprint from some of the vendors, Kanter being one.

Aside from possibly finding a good used one from one of the people on site here, the main Packard vendors have the lens. There are differences between models so you will need to have the exact model or a part number to get the correct one. Max Merritt lists them and has photos of the lenses on his sitehttp://www.maxmerrittauto.com/ and Kanter Auto lists them alsohttp://www.kanter.com/packard/pac-454.html The parking lamp lenses are part of group 4. There are other vendors who also have good selections of parts. Patrician Industries packards1@aol.com and Tuscon Packardshttp://www.packardpartsonline.com/index.html are a couple of more. David Moe of Seattle Packards usually has a good used selection.

At the very least, unscrew cable from back of speedo before doing any more driving until you have time to lube or find and repair problem. If you don't, your speedo may suddenly join those recently departed.

Thanks. As I said, don't own one of those anymore but didn't think there was that much to wear other than lever holes. At any rate, any repro of parts not still available would surely be well received. Your light bulbs are a perfect example.

I know some things I and maybe others would like to see repro'd would be accessory items. From some of the threads recently and items or leads requested, it seems a lot of people would like to accessorize their cars yet other than in junk yards, or the rare NOS that surfaces, those items are just not there.

I am curious about the repro question. I don't own one of these models but with the popularity and considerable number of cars produced that used the same mechanism, are there no new parts still available at all from vendors? I know anticipated demand is one of the questions but I would think with the quantities made, these parts would still be available. Would be a shame to reproduce something that even though limited, might still be around. Is there a specific area that wears on these that might be serviced by some kind of retrofit piece you could make & could be installed by drilling a hole or something simple instead?

One thing I was curious about is the bar itself. JP's has a considerable bend and appears larger whereas mine is straight and maybe 3/16 diameter. I can see the memo addressing a straight bar being too long and being taken care of with a small bend but his already has a large one. How many bars were there?

I believe the 50 unit could be considered a work in progress--even more than the 54 gear start. Not surprising a lack of parts. Several changes in the run as you have noticed already. The very early ones even had a sand cast valve body--very rough and crude looking exterior. I am not sure how many of the valves would even interchange with each other or with the later die cast bodies. Instructions to mechanic was to change that assy as a unit.

In addition to 55Packardguy's comments, mine are similar -- but it's interesting treatment and surely plausible. I think it still looks a bit much around the lights though. It might look a little more subtle with the metal light trim toned down a bit. Maybe body color with just a slight surround--but you're the artist and most all of your efforts are still commendable.

The only place I know out here that does them anymore is Custom Auto in Santa Ana, CA. No idea on price but probably looking at every bit as much.
