Terry Martin - RIP
Home away from home
Home away from home

ECAnthony
Terry Martin, founder of the National Packard Museum in Warren, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at the age of 82.

Terry wrote the first four chapters of Automobile Quarterly's book "Packard - A History of the Motor Car and the Company," covering the Packard family and the cars during the Warren, Ohio years. In the early 1980s he restored the original 1903 "Old Pacific" for the Henry Ford Museum. In 1983, drove his own 1903 (named "Old Pacific II") from San Fransisco to New York, retracing Tom Fetch's route of 80 years earlier. In 2003, he once again drove (and trailered) "Old Pacific II" coast to coast.

Without Terry, we would not know as much as we do now about Packard's early history. His obituary can be found at:

115" wheelbase = 1937 Six
120" wheelbase = 1935-37 120 / One Twenty

----------

I have no words, but here are two photos from Wayne State University, showing the bridge on March 1, 1939 while under construction, and on August 15, 1956.

Leeedy - Is this the theater you were talking about? This was taken during a 1953 Packard sales meeting.

Re: How do I validate 1954 Clipper Deluxe transmission

In order to check the fluid level on the the original Ultramatics (1949 to mid-1954) you would have to go under the car (or put it up on a lift), as the cap and dip stick is located on the driver's side where the main body of the transmission meets the bell housing. In mid-1954 the Gear Start Ultramatic was introduced, and a long dip stick was installed on the driver's side of the oil pan, Thus, you could check the fluid once the hood was opened. The Twin Ultramatics were introduced with the 1955s (along with the V-8 engines). They have a dip stick on the passenger-side of the transmission.

How many photos were saved in 1956? And, how many were throw away (and later saved)?

Re: A car I have been offered is it a Packard?

Just a note - there is no "Kimes book." There is, however, the book published by Automobile Quarterly in 1978, "Packard - A History of the Motor Car and the Company" which Beverly Kimes is credited as the editor. She wrote a two-page introduction, but she did not write any of the chapters.

It might better be called the "Langworth book," as Richard M. Langworth was the one who conceived the idea of it, convinced Automobile Quarterly to publish it, hired all 16 of the authors, authored two chapters himself and edited 14 chapters as well before he left AQ to start his own publishing company. When that happened, AQ assigned Beverly Kimes to take over and listed her name as the editor. Langworth was listed (in small print) as "Associate Editor" for the 14 chapters he worked on.

When the Society of Automotive Historians presented its book-of-the-year award to the AQ book, Beverly Kimes' name was the only one on the plaque - not one of the 16 authors who actually wrote the book was mentioned.

Packard never went "out of business," they simply stopped making automobiles.

The "Access Hollywood" video was taken at the NBC Studios in Burbank, California. That's one of Jay Leno's cars parked there. (I can't tell for certain what it is...)
