There are several threads on the AAC Packard forum on the subject.
http://forums.aaca.org Doing a search for "Chrysler" after you're in the Packard forum brings up one but there are others. Can't give the exact words to search to bring them up. Some have had luck, other not so thrilled due to various reasons. Another alternative might be the GM transmission here: http://www.mikestransmissions.com/Classics/UltraOD.html and I believe there is a TH400 conversion also available from another vendor.

My 2 cents say go for it. Personally, I'm partial to the 57 because to me it was very well done and a nice car under the circumstances it came into being while the 58's were just a bit too much and kinda broke the continuity. You're right that some might raise an eyebrow but so what-it says Packard on it. Very sorry now that I didn't buy a 57 P. a few years ago when the opportunity came by. Am sure you'll be welcome--

Can someone shed some light on AC unit? I can"t make it out but it almost looks like a Packard script and crest on unit. I don't recall ever seeing mention of anything but the in dash factory unit or the trunk unit Studebaker had. Dealer item or someone making it fancy or am I hallucinating??

I went to a couple of old time commercial refrig places locally several years ago when I first obtained my car and they are probably still laughing. Apparently (here at least) it wasn't even that popular on refrigerators. Was able to find a new seal from Packard suppliers but never did find valves and gaskets which is why mine does not work now. Tried to find something that would fit, but just about everything more modern had a different arrangement than the 2 sizes of circular against the valve plate. A machinist friend tried making but didn't last long as material used not correct and gasket couldn't hold pressure. York & Tecumseh used round, but different size entirely so if anyone else has suggestion, I am all ears too.

At least it doesn't have the extra weights/dampeners that some of prewar cars had in fenders or end of front bumper. There were a few articles/fixes on cowl shake for 22nd series which apparently had different frame members, extra fender bolts and radiator brace as well--all to be correctly tensioned and tightened with no missing bolts.

Congratulations. As to the question on weight, I would think you are shy 5-600 lbs--maybe more--without the front end and it just can't compensate.

If when you say "nothing happened" you mean you did not even hear solenoids click, then I would wonder if the brake switch decided to quit while the car sat. Also, since it is on the upper cushion, how much weight is off the front. Is it possible the TL has driven as far as possible trying to compensate for light front and has hit the limit.

I do believe bases much larger than modern cars. Apparently even Packard had problems because there was a bulletin for 55 to check rear lighters because wrong base installed and was so large, element would pop completely out. Wouldn't that be a thrill and give a new definition of hot seat if it landed in your lap.
Seriously, even new cars have problem. I have one item that will work in a lighter socket but not the power acc outlet because of size & not fitting.

You're correct, that is exhaust pipe from eng to muffler. What gets more curioser is that the specs from 21st series data book are same as 22-23rd mentioned from SC but my 47 2106 (conveniently disassembled) instead of the 2 1/2 spec'd has a 2 1/4 pipe and the 1 3/4 in tailpipe as 47 clipper noted for his.
Maybe they decided large wasn't necessary or because of shortages, used what was available. Since my car wasn't when running nor 47 clippers is now having overheating issues, maybe tailpipe is not the answer on your smaller engine either. Does the vacuum number indicate any kind of restriction? A friend had overheat issues on his 51 that turned out to be the manifold valve opening but sticking just partially open somehow. Said it took forever to find but he was also burning valves and on the 3rd grind, the mechanic took manifold apart and found true problem.
