Re: Clutch Issue

John Sauser
Newbie,
Your car uses a Long Clutch, The friction disc in a Long Clutch has a wavy thin spring plate under the friction material, called a Marcel spring.

If this is missing the clutch will chatter!! Clutch re- builders have been known to leave this out.

Rontom,

A short wooden dowel, 6-7 inches long mark it in 1/2 inch increments, keep it in the glove box. 1 1/2 to 2 inch above the top of the tubes is good.

Have you checked to see if the mechanical advance is working?

Find someone with an old SUN dist. machine and have them test it. I find that when there is no mechanical advance the engine starts to give up at about 45-50 MPH.

A quick check is to watch the timing mark on the vibration damper with a timing lite while someone revs the engine, you should see the timing marks advance.

If you suspect a mechanical advance problem and can't find a SUN machine contact me as I have one, and am willing to help out.

Sincerely, John

Some of the 50's 288 engines came with hyd. lifters, engine suffix H, are these the same lifter hyd. units as the 327/359
engines? Part # 410845, I would think that they are.

Thanks, John

I rebuilt my trans and r-9 about 5 years ago and will say use your digital camera to photo every step of the teardown. You cannot take too many pictures. Before you move or remove any part take a good picture of it. A digital camera is your best friend.

Rebuild was straight forward but for most of us it's been awhile since I was in a transmission( at least 50 years ).

Good luck,
John

Fred's right on.

Most don't realize that in the primary ignition circuit there are 16-18 connection points from battery post to battery post.

A little voltage loss here a little there and it soon adds up, the clue here is that you got rid of an electronic ignition. lower then 4.5 volts measured at the ign module and they flat don't work.

You need to measure the voltage from the neg. coil terminal to the pos. batt. terminal with the starter engaged.

The filler neck extends into the tank to within about 1/2 inch from the bottom, this forces all of the air to escape thru the whistle/vent, none can come out the fill tube. It is slower then the average tank to fill.

That is a tachometer, looking at the left side view of the engine you will see the tach drive coming off the distributor drive shaft tower to the fire wall.
