Thanx for the quick replies. That is a very clever solution to the problem for dipstick access. Also for the fill thru the vent. I'll pass this on to the mechanic who is working on the '54. Les

Can a Gearstart transmission pan be used on an Ultramatic transmission so that the fluid can be checked with a dipstick?

Continuing the discussion. I have a '54 Convertible with a 359ci engine. I have been offered a 288 AT head, #420537, casting date 12-17-51. Would this be a suitable replacement for my aluminum Head?

My front splash apron has 3 rubber pieces on the front edge (I believe that one is missing). There are strips of what looks like thin tar paper on the bottom and top of the rear edge too. These are held on with staples. The rubber and "tar paper" were originally black. I'm hoping to attach some photos:
