Modern Tire Sizes
Home away from home
Home away from home

Keegan Chaput
I tried to do a search to see if this was covered already. I know the original size of the rims and tires, but I don't know the equivalent in the modern sizing.

tirerack.com says that the 7.60x15 converts to 225/75/15, but it also lists about 4 other sizes. With the narrow rim of 15x5.5 it would be easy to pick a tire too wide. And I'd like the speedo to run as accurate as possible.

Also, what is the bolt pattern on these?

Mine is a 55 Clipper.

I'm leaning towards that route as well for the sway bar. It looks like the sway bar took a hit on the passenger side and the bracket is a little bent. I can't say that I'm surprised it's bent. Those things look pretty flimsy and they hang down so far out in front, it's just a matter of time before they're smacked by something. A couple of new inner brackets and some universal bushings seem like the way to go.

I've tried buying urethane rod stock, freezing it and lathe turning it for some simple bushings

1955 Clipper Deluxe Rubber Replacement

One of the first things I need to do to this car is replace just about every piece of rubber in the suspension and steering. I'm looking for a good source for these. I know about Steele Rubber Co. but I don't know of any others.

Also, has anyone replaced with urethane bushings instead? It would be the last time you'd ever have to do it.

Just curious.

Re: A Good Tool Box?

About 3 years ago I purchased a Top and Bottom cabinet from Northern Tool. Mine is a Remline but now they call it a Torin. For my money, it's worked out excellent. I use it in my truck accessory business every day and it's shown no signs of wear, even after rolling it around the shop completely full of tools. I wouldn't trust the locks on it if you're looking for security, and I don't like the fact that you have to keep the top lid open to get the top drawers to open, but knowing that I'd buy another one again without a second thought.

Here's a link:

You can buy 3 or 4 of these or 1 snap-on.

And make sure all your buddys put the tools back where they found them, just a personal pet peeve.

Great info! I think I've got what I need to make a decision on making the conversion from Gen to Alt. From looking at my 55 clipper, it appears that it's 12v neg ground already. (that's what it means when the negative batt terminal is grounded to the front of the engine block, right?) All I know is that I know nothing.

I need to learn more about the 12v Neg. Ground issue. Are there any good articles to read up on it?

Has anyone done this? I know that it's a popular mod with the Chevy guys, and I like that you get full power and charging at idle speeds. Ideally, I'd like to convert to a internally regulated GM unit.

Thanks Guys!

I was able to snap a few photo's today when I brought it home. I drove it about 40 miles this morning to get it home after purchasing it. A bit of a cold ride in Minnesota with holes in the floor pan and a seemingly non-functional heater, but I made it without incident.

I've got it on the registry, but I'm still working on some of the details regarding the history and whatnot. Not sure if it comes across in the photo, but the rockers are toast. Luckily the previous owner sent along a replacement set. I've also got some patch work to do on the floor pan and some small rust holes above the headlights.

I'm going to have to take my time with this project, and I've decided to sort out the car mechanically before attempting body and interior. The goal is to keep it running and road worthy as much of the time as possible.

Hi everybody,

My name is Keegan and I am a new member to the site. I just wanted to say how impressed I am with the wealth of knowledge there is here. I know how important it will be now that I just bought my first Packard. It's a 1955 Clipper Sedan that I bought with the proceeds from selling my 1954 Chevy.

Thanks for such a great resource!
