I agree with the suggestions already made here. My first check would be the radiator cap. If that is OK, I would them check the water distribution tube. If it is clogged it will cause the back couple of cylinders to overheat at cruising speeds where there is more heat generated and the water then can't circulate fast enough to these cylinders. I would then check to see if a mouse has created a house in your muffler tail pipe which causes back pressure. One other item to check is to see if the manifold heat riser is stuck in the closed position.
Good luck and try to enjoy the problem solving aspect of this situation.

Hi and welcome.

I like the way the prewar and postwar Clippers look and perform. I also think the 48 and up straight eights are great and easily keep up with traffic. Especially with overdrive. An added benefit of these cars is the lower price than the prewar cars.
Good luck and find something you particularly like the looks of.

I'm sure you know all of the following. But just in case.
Check to see if you have spark at the plugs. Simply take the spark plug wire off and, with insulated pliers, hold it close to a good ground and crank the engine. Make sure it turns over a couple of times to assure it goes through the ignition stroke. I usually take the spark plug out and lay it on the head to remove another variable in the system.

Then if you get spark, it's at the right time, you're getting fuel, and you have compression, you should up and running in no time.

My father owned and operated a radiator shop for over thirty years and all that time he never used anything but a light coat of lacquer. I don't know about the newer specialty paints. I just know what he did must have worked. Because that and the quality of his work caused the customers in town to keep him in business long after he tried to quit repairing radiators and concentrate on automotive glass.

You mentioned that the car had been restored. Did they put a heavy coat of paint on the radiator? Paint doesn't transfer heat well.

I'm specifically interested in information on the Packard Country Club dealership. If you have pics I could use, I'd appreciate it. You can contact me at dbaird@semo.edu. Or mldab2@v-link.net.
Thanks in advance.
Dave

That kind of play in the rotor is too much. Did I understand you to say the play was in the rod beneath the distributor? If so, this rod is connected to the distributor gear on the camshaft. Make not of the direction of the slot in this shaft and pull it out of the cylinder block. Check the end of this shaft to determine if it has worn. If it isn't, the play may be in the gear itself. I hope not. The only way to replace/repair this gear is to split the block and replace it.

I happen to have a vacuum tank that I think fits your car. Send a PM my way or just e-mail me at dbaird@semo.edu and I can compare and let you know.
