Hello all, I may be somewhat oldfashioned but I actually carry a spare 6V Optima battery when I take any of my old cars out (not one for each of course). I have used it on the odd occasion, maybe six times in 20 years, but always on someone else's vehicle. It certainly sounded like a supply problem such as a loose terminal, etc. to grind to a halt so suddenly. Even if the battery is dead, the generator will provide the ignition voltage. It is why you can bump start a generator vehicle when an alternator vehicle will not as the generator vehicle does not need exciter current to generate voltage. Peter T

Hello Fish N Jim. thanks for your advice ..it is from outdoor storage and water ingress, hopefully, nothing to do with mould/mildew. It is not just a door trim it also has some on the front seat. The material is in very good order....just seeking advice on what other people have found effective in removing water stains that have been there for 50 or so years. I actually need to remove that door card so I shall check out the advised methods. Just hoping that someone has had experience in correcting this malady, without me having to "experiment" too much and ruin the original trim. Peter Toet

Hi Gary, thanks for that, did it include any water stains or was it a general cleanup of the upholstery?

Hello all, I have recently purchased a 21st Series 1946 Clipper. It has been restored mechanically, including fitting a 282 46 Eight instead of the original 245 six. I am sorting out a few issues with the R9 overdrive at the moment but I was wondering what I may do to remove water stains from the very good condition original upholstery. Any advice on what to use...dry cleaning fluid perhaps? Peter Toet

I have fitted a few R6 overdrives to 38 Juniors and the 37 Super Eights may be slightly easier to fit, using the 39 Super Eight bell housing. I would fit an R9 or R11 ( R11 would be the best and most reliable). There are a few tutorials about retrofitting the Packard OD boxes to non OD Packards) Easier to fit without the Governor but needs some planning. Also need to sort out Universals and tailshaft.

Hello Ross, I have had a number of Ultramatic Packards and pulled out and overhauled the Ultra and Twins probably at least 10 times over the past 50 years. I have a 56 Patrician with 55k miles. I recoed the trans of my 56 Patrician with new bushes, seals throughout and It appears to be going ok now but I was advised to fit a power steering filter into the cooling pipe circuit to catch all of the dregs which you find in the sump. I have fitted it and noticed that the Direct Drive engagement "bump" is not as strong. I fear that Direct Drive pressure may be suffering due to excessive converter back pressure caused by the filter. Any advice would be appreciated.
