The 47 and 48 both take the 3 eh long rectangular battery. They are manufactured today primarily for industrial applications and often used in sequence. I was told by a dealer that 2 to 3 years is all I could expect. Much better service with these batteries and they have 1000cca which is higher than the original 3 eh.

I have Optima Red Tops in all 3 of my 6 volt Packards. Got tired of hunting for E3H batteries and having them only last 2 years or so. The first one I bought went in the '47 and it was installed 1/7/11. It has apparently failed following a night time cruise over the weekend. I have heard some say they have gotten nearly 10 years and since this one is just a few months short of 7 years. I guess I should be happy. Is this about average?

My son and I recently partnered in a 56 Patrician. It does not seem to charge properly even though the regulator looks like it is a fairly new Borg Warner. He is a mechanic and his test point to the regulator. ( he has polarized) Does anyone have a make and model number for this 1 year only negative ground 12 volt unit that I can try to find? Appreciate the help.

I was always told when I started tinkering with cars in my teens that you check with engine running in neutral or park. Warm but not necessarily hot.

Thanks Howard, it may not be pretty but I am going to do the napa unit and splice that wire to the front. It is on the block and not on the firewall. I keep my cars as original as possible but they are primarily drivers and not trailer cars or show queens. Tommy

I try to carry spare parts when touring or going to Packard Club. I suspect my coil may be weak but don't know what to do about the armored wire on the back of the coil which I think goes to the ignition. N.O.S. ones are available for the price of your first born. There are six volt coils that are just as strong and not that 40 plus years old. Could you splice that wire in the back of the original to the terminal on the front of the newer replacement or just run a wire to a ground and leaver the other disconnected? Thanks
