My first Packard, 1939 Six, had it too. My 1940 was my every day car in the late '60s and early '70 also had it but I opted for an NOS bail ornament most of the time since the other was too tempting when left parked somewhere.

I had wondered about the one pair looking like quarter window lifts as they supposedly came from an Executive sedan rather thean a hardtop. I also got the three door switches, along with the power seat mechanism with them but not the driver's master, nor any hardware that might be needed to install them

Great to know and a big thank you to all who responded! I was sure that something was to be attached to the holes but there is no sign on this NOS part that anything every had been.

Going through my parts, I sometimes come across things I don't recognize such as this NOS emergency brake handle. None of my Packards had one like this so is it indeed Packard and if so, which year(s)?

I'm at my Oregon shop now and today took down the motors to look at them after following this thread closely. I was surprised to see that one pair appears to use the same motor while the other pair has one similar and one totally different. Fitment is identical so some must have been early replacements but does anyone know which are original and which are replacements?

Back to the problem at hand (and I have never had a leaking cap on my many 1951 to 1956 Packards), if fuel is being smelled inside the car it would have to be from a leak farther forward. Even with the cap leaking profusely, it would not be smelled inside while driving.

Years ago the windshield in the family's 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 developed a leak that kept putting water into the car's kick panel plastic wastebasket making whatever was left in it rot. Guess what my engineer father's fix was? Why of course to drill holes in the wastebasket!

This notch is the same bad engineering and serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever. It's really not rocket science to simply put a note with the new tanks that a vented cap must be used. I had planned on buying several of these tanks and may ultimately have to do so but I hope this problem is rectified first so that I don't have to have them repaired before they can be installed. I think PackardV8's observation hit the nail on the head:

Thank you and that's what I thought. Most of mine are like yours but others have finer teeth and look different overall so I suspect the odd ones are Chrysler as I think the dealer had switched over.

I have stacks of the clutch disks that came with a stock of new Packard parts that I bought years ago from a San Jos? dealer and most are like yours but others aren't. Are they all the same in your transmissions?
