Good Evening all...If you think that you have gas in your oil, don't drive it until you can drain the pan(sump)and put in new oil...very inexpensive insurance...Ernie in Arizona

Good afternoon all...I have a question in that I am wondering if the 288 is a better engine or simply an incorrect replacement engine for the car? Will the car be a better driver with the 288, or will it even be noticeable to a driver? Ernie in Arizona

Good Evening all...When machines are this old, and have been repaired/rebuilt as many times as these have, it is almost more about what folks could get their hands on rather than what might have been original.

Repairs, in my humble opinion, for the first 25 or so years were just repairing 'Old Cars' that were just used for transportation.

As we take them apart now, we're seeing largely repair parts, and not original nuts and bolts, much of the time. Ernie in Arizona

Re: thermostat's

Good Morning all...Just a small point...but a great many Model 'A' Fords do run 160 degree thermostats these days. Many of the engine rebuilders request that the engines use thermostats for the reason that Owen suggests...better, cleaner, longer operation of the engine.

If your water passages are clean and your radiator is clean then pay particular attention to your distributor and vacuum advance...If these two items are not up to snuff, they can cause engines to run warm/hot. Also if your carburetor is not set up properly and the engine is running lean...warm/hot running can happen...Ernie in Arizona

Good Morning to you and welcome to our site and welcome to the wonderful world of Packard Automobiles.

You will find many people on this site to help you. Kanter 800-526-1096 and Max Merritt 800-472-2573 are good places to start for parts.

You might find that you can purchase good used or new old stock head bolts and nuts for your new Packard for less than the price that you have quoted from the firms above.

Depending on where you are located, you might find help from another member of the site.

One note of caution, Packard Engines were at the top as regards quality...put it back together as it was intended to be assembled. Helicoils work fine.

A shop manual is really helpful if you are doing the work yourself or if you are going to have a shop do the work, they will appreciate the information in the manual. It should be available on this site or on Packardclub.org.

Easy does it and you'll have the old girl running before too long...Ernie in Arizona

Good Evening...Just a humble comment. We have a 1949 Deluxe which used to get stuck between gears...usually in second gear. We flushed the transmission and then filled it with 140 weight gear oil...pretty heavy stuff. That was several years ago and it has been fine since. The transmission seemed to have much lighter gear oil in it. We tried this because we learned on our Model A Ford which takes 600 weight oil! Good luck and a little holly water on the hood ornament can't hurt! Ernie in Arizona

Good Morning...Robert is a great guy and will be interested in where the car is today. If it came through his shop at Third and French in Santa Ana, California...He will have information on it. Robert started in the shop washing parts and years along purchased the business so his memory goes back quite a ways...He also runs 'Packards International' and the fact that the car is now in Australia might mean a story for his magazine...Ernie in Arizona

Re: New Rear Springs for a 49

Good Afternoon all...Progress Report...The new rear springs are on Prudence and she is really happy and sitting nice and level once again. The job took about 2.5 hours and was done by my friend Alex Alfaro who has been helping me with mechanical repairs on different machines for 20 or so years. We did it on the hoist with a transmission jack under the pumpkin, and several screw jacks to support the axels. All the bolts turned, two needed a bit of heat but not too much. One more job completed...I believe that I am down to the clock and the radio...the radio will play, but the frequency adjuster does not work worth a damn! Ernie in Arizona

Good Morning all...Nice looking car, but I don't know if the visor is correct. It just looks out of place to me. How about you folks who know much more than I do? Ernie in Arizona
