Hi

Although the 1937-'38 320 ci straight eights are largely the same, the 1939 320 ci straight eight was significantly revised to fit into the 120 chassis to create the new Super 8. It is a one-year engine because it was replaced for 1940 by the new monobloc 356 ci straight eight in the 160 and 180.

Apparently the 1939 320 wasn't quite as robust as the prior version. There is a Service Bulletin for dealer garages detailing how to replace that engine with a postwar 327 service engine for customers.

While we're purist now, back in the era when these were used cars, keeping an otherwise good car with a tired engine on the road was the only consideration.

Kevin:

I have that same sound when I start my '53 Clipper Deluxe, same 327 as your car. It never seems to be any louder and always mostly quiets down once it's warmed up, just a minor bit of that sound remains. Unless someone more knowledgeable weighs in, I doubt if its anything to worry about.

We're all so used to new cars having every trace of mechanical din silenced out or deadened, we forget cars then weren't that way.

Here is another example of a 23rd Series Super Eight that would be an excellent choice for a Packard you can enjoy immediately:
https://forums.aaca.org/topic/370328-for-sale-%C2%A01950-packard-super-4dr-sedan-series-23-woverdrive-14500-ashland-mo-not-mine-price-reduced-to-13500-january-2022-better-new-photos/#comment-2317074

Unless you have the skills and facilities to perform the restoration work necessary and the time to do so, buying an example such as this is far more cost-effective now. Good luck with your search.

Speaking of poor photos to sell a car, can anyone figure out what is going on with this 1953 Cavalier for sale:

A '40 120 coupe project, extremely optimistically priced:

This image was posted on the AACA Forum.
Although this is obviously a staged promotion image for the 1918-1919 Packard Twin-Six Landaulet, it illustrates a genteel social custom of the era, namely "taking the air".   Since the horse-drawn carriage days, the upper social classes would dress in their finery, be chauffeured in their elegant carriages through the parks and parkways enjoying the pleasant weather.  Of course, it was on view both for their own class and to the envy of those who weren't.    When one could afford a $6,000 motorcar then, one wanted others to recognize that.

Merry Christmas to all and a big-thanks to-Big Kev for all he does to maintain this wonderful civil refuge for Packard enthusiasts worldwide.

Charlie Brown vowed to not let all this commercialization spoil his Christmas and neither should we.
