Headed to be Engineer Officer on the USS JACKSONVILLE.

Installed the clutch linkage today. Now I just need to determine where the return spring attaches.

Oh. Duh. You'd think I'd remember that, since I took it out. Wish they were all that easy!

If you give us enough warning I'm pretty sure we can round up some Packards(including '37's) and Packard people to welcome you down-under.

EDIT - Where in Idaho will your '37 be? I'm curious because my '41 120 Coupe was at Middleton, near Boise, from 1961 to 2007.

Mal, it's doubtful that I'll pull into Sydney, but if I do, I'll look you up for sure. My wife and I might attempt a vacation in Aussie while we're stationed in Hawaii, so I'll let you know if we head down that way. I think she would like a ride in a shiny Packard!

My car will be at my family's ranch in Viola, Idaho. It's a little town about six hours north of Boise.

Gerd, I understand Mal's intentions as honorable. If you have evidence to the contrary....

I accomplished a little bit more today. Put the fan on the water pump, put what's left of my lateral stabilizer back on the car (between the frame and transmission), started restoring my fuel tank, thought some more about the hard line from the tank, and cleaned a few bits and pieces. Oh yeah, hooked up the throttle linkage and tightened a few things. Measured for radiator hoses, and determined what I'd need to install the exhaust system (3 clamps, a universal hanger, manifold clamp, and some bolts, specifically). So I guess I got a little bit done.

I found some wear in the clutch linkage. I just painted over it for now (the car shifted fine before I took it apart), but I'll build it back up with a welder sometime in the future.

Also found a mystery on my steering box. Is my adjusting nut missing? How big of a deal is this? Not going to get it fixed in the next few days, but I do want it right eventually. Thanks!

Re: Fuel hard line

Ken_P
Bump!

On the fuel tank end, does the line go over, under, or through the frame? My car has a conveniently placed hole, but not really sure that it should go through, it seems like it would be easy to have it rub. Thanks!

Edit: Also, does the fuel pickup line from the tank face forward or face the passenger frame rail?

Today saw quite the adventure in the shop. I wanted to pull my water distribution tube. I had the requisite piece of all-thread with a bend in the end, and I expected 20 minutes to get it out, a brass tube, and a little bit of cleaning. The first picture shows what I ended up with 4 hours later. Mine is steel. An informed source tells me that at some time in my car's history, the original tube was probably replaced with a galvanized steel replacement. So, I'm looking for a brass one!

Thanks to a Packarding friend, I'm going to be calling on a rebuilt 115c engine in Wisconsin. I could actually pick it up on the way to Idaho next weekend, so if the price is right, I'll probably bite. I'll need to decide what the right price is though! Thoughts?

I also was able to bleed the brakes tonight. My most wonderful wife helped me. It helped that I put the seats back in the car this weekend! All I need to do to drive the car is rig up temp ignition wiring, cooling, and clutch linkage. I'm hoping to give my parents, sister, et al rides in the Packard once it gets to Idaho. It will be stored for the next three years. I hope to find someone to do the bodywork while I'm out to sea, and I'll probably do little odds and ends when I have some leave time, but I don't expect a lot to happen.

As always, thanks for reading.

Brought it home today. Backflushed with a garden hose, it was clean, or at least I couldn't get any crud out. I really don't think he touched it. Close call though. I knew it was a non-pressurized system but didn't think about the testing consequences.

West, thanks for the tip. I was going to put another coat on the fan tonight, glad I checked the forum first!

I went to go pick up my radiator today. I dropped it off at the only local shop that would work on it last week. I wanted it leak checked and boiled out. I told the shop last Monday that I was in a hurry, and if they couldn't do it, not a big deal, just let me know. He said, "Oh no problem, I'll have it done Thursday or Friday." So, Friday, I went to get it. No call from them, and I tried to call the shop but the listed phone number was disconnected. When I showed up it wasn't done, he said he would do it that afternoon or Monday morning. So, I went to pick it up today, and guess what- it wasn't done! Sitting in the same spot on the floor. He said he pressure tested it, but not really sure I believe him- it was in the EXACT same spot. So, I guess I'll try back flushing it with a hose and call it a day, since the car goes on the trailer next Wednesday whether I am ready for it to or not!

Enough griping, out to the garage!

Kev,

Agree completely with the primary and secondary springs. The part of the job that always turns the air blue around me is trying to hold everything in place while trying to get the first spring or two on, like on the retaining pins.

Break text. While surfing through the forum today I came across a reference to setting the anchor pin eccentric properly on reassembly. What is the proper orientation for this eccentric? I tried to adjust the brakes using the major adjustment in the service manual, but couldn't get 0.010 at both ends of the secondary shoe without binding the drum on a different portion of the shoe, so I just got the clearance the same at both ends with the drum not dragging.

Proof that my Packard likes me: I went to put a spare relay in the glovebox, saw a bunch of crap, dug through it, and found the brass fitting that goes between the fuel hard line and the flex hose! Holy crap! What are the odds of that. I consider it a statement of appreciation from the old girl for all the cleaning, painting, and repairing I've done this summer. Maybe if I get the brakes all done today, I'll even find the clip that holds it to the frame!

In other news, adjusted the rear brakes today and am in the process of setting up the emergency brake. I continue to hate working on drum brakes. Turns out, I need the practice!

Enough, enough! You guys have talked me off the ledge. Asking price is $6500 but looks like shipping would add at least $3000 more. Flackmaster, your hilarious diatribe also helped convince me I was being stupid. Locomotive? One Packard is enough... for now. And I asked the man who owns one.
