Howard, what do you mean " the 356 was completely obsolete "? Short history lesson if you don't mind.

As always good advise, from all. I usually jack up the car, put the jack stands under the frame and let wheels hang free, but this time I had it on blocks under the wheels. So I guess I'll give it another try with weight off wheels.
Thanks All!

Greasing the King Pin
Home away from home
Home away from home

Wesley Boyer
Hi, just wanted to touch base on this. Doing my yearly maintenance (but I think it's been longer then that.) Started greasing the front end, found 17 grease fittings for my 47 Custom Super Clipper. I was taught to add grease until grease starts to come out. So I guessing according to my picture of the King Pin I still haven't added enough grease since the lower joint is still dry and no grease going out. I would guess if I can't get any grease out of that joint then my next step would be to take it apart and clean it up.
Am I right or wrong?
Thanks all for the help.
Wes

I don't know if this would matter, but did you do a back flush. I would try anything before removing the head, also what type on coolant are you using? Also see this from Mr. Kanterhttps://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=16042&forum=4&post_id=160961#forumpost160961

Dave, glade to hear! So much information, I also saw an article about the ribs that were put on the bottom of the engine due to stress crackers using a special paint while checking the engine at Packard. And also seeing the sales of all the cars with Packard out selling Cadillac.

Well, first things first, are you sure about running hot, might sound like a dumb question, but how accurate is your reading.
Next when was the last time you checked your timing?
Since you flushed the system, did you check the Thermostat?
Try this first, okay.

I did not know if another else had seen this from Automotive Industries Sept. 1, 1950, talking about Packard's Newest Design.

There is a lot of information in these magazines.

Re: Valve Bay Surprise

Wesley Boyer
I just lapped mine to make sure I got a good seal, using a hand tool like the one pictured below, and you should see the valve look like the other picture down below, the seat should look the same. If not the valve could be bent. But like Owen said if any pitting or any other damage then get it corrected

Re: Starter question

Wesley Boyer
What Howard said, even if your cables look good, doesn't mean they are good. I had a similar problem. My 47 cranks slow as all 47 's do, but it would not start. I don't think that it fired but only on a couple of cylinders, not enough to get it running. I was thinking about looking at rebuilding the Starter, but I figure changing out the cables first would be a lot easy. I built new cables put them on and if fired right up. Checking the voltages like Howard said should tell you if your cables are good or not, that is if you have the correct gauge cables.
Hope this helps.
