Re: Valve Bay Surprise

Well now that I look at it again, I would say go ahead and pull the valves remove the hyd. lifters ( I would do this one at a time.) and get some valve grinding compound and a hand valve grinder (You may get some strange looks at some parts stores, because they only know of one kind of grinder.) Just a little dab of valve grinding compound and seat the valves, you should see a nice ring all the way around the valve, then just wipe up whats left of the valve grinding compound. If you see a gap in the ring on the valve that usually means that valve is bent. Don't forget to plug the holes around the valves and there are holes behind the valves also. Clean the Hyd. Lifters, press check them and you should be good to go. From what I've read dirt is the biggest cause of Hyd. Lifters not woking correctly.
Hope this helps.

There is the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", so I myself I would take the plugs out crank it over looking to see if all valves look like they are working correctly and put the covers back on.
But that's just me.

Well I pulled the hub off the Right hand side hoping to find two Primary shoes on this side but nope. Just like the other side, two Secondary shoes. So I guess I'll just leave it as is.

I looked at your picture closer and it looks like one shoe was glued on and the other was put on with rivets, I don't know if that makes a dfference. Also looking closer at the picture I saw another brake assay. on the floor, if that is from the other side then it would show that the springs you put on are backwards. But one thing is for sure, it sure does look pretty. Makes me think of the movie the Dirty Dozen there Donald S. says "They sure look pretty but can they fight?".
Hope you see the humor in that.
Also if the springs are in good condition, I would think it wouldn't hurt to reuse them. But that is only my personal opinion.

Stewart, I forgot to mention, look were your Emer. Brake/Parking Brake cable comes though the back plate, and about the springs readhttps://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=16132&forum=2
Kanter explains a little about the springs. Also it looks like you have two Primary (maybe not) Shoes, I found mine had two Secondary shoes on the Drivers side, I need to look at the Passengers side next, maybe I will find two Primary Shoes there.
I hope this helps.

Stewart, the last picture you posted looks like the passenger side. My picture was from the drivers side.

Stewart, It looks like you got the spring on your Parking Brake Strut on the wrong end. Also are the Yellow and Orange springs in correct position. I would look this up but too busy with kids right now. Sorry!

Thanks JW, at least I know I have one follower. Ha Ha! While looking for more information on the Hub and brakes, I found this other guy and he has some good videos, so I am passing them on. Also checkout out his videos on rebuilding a 1914 Packard. So here's the link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFe45WBhUY0
Enjoy!

Good catch Owen I keep forgetting about Mechanical Lifters. So remove the valve covers (your probably need some new gaskets for the valve covers.) and it should look like this Youtube video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLwTtoYAIzc
Sorry but I can't help you on how to adjust them but somebody here will.
